1 drop of water generates 6 electricity! Talking about the world's largest clean energy corridor

2024-05-15

The vast Yangtze River gathers large rivers and runs through long gorges, containing abundant resources such as hydropower, shipping, and freshwater. Six large hydropower stations, including Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Three Gorges, and Gezhouba, are arranged from top to bottom along the main stream of the Yangtze River, forming the world's largest clean energy corridor: spanning over 1800 kilometers, with a water level drop of over 900 meters, a total of 110 hydroelectric generators continue to operate, bringing rolling green electricity to the vast river. Not long ago, the industrial Internet platform was deployed in six cascade hydropower stations, marking the basic completion of the "industrial brain" of the world's largest clean energy corridor, and significantly improving the operational efficiency, safety and reliability of hydropower stations. The cumulative power generation of six cascade hydropower stations has exceeded 3.5 trillion kilowatt hours, which is equivalent to saving over 1 billion tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 2.8 billion tons. At the same time, cascade reservoirs cooperate and release comprehensive benefits such as smooth navigation, water resource protection, and ecological protection. The total installed capacity of 71.695 million kilowatts is "1 drop of water generates 6 times of electricity". The six reservoir joint debugging makes the "green engine" stronger. The Baihetan hydropower station in the deep canyon, with a maximum dam height of 289 meters, draws in the surging river water. The water flowing down from a height of over 200 meters drives the turbine generator set to rotate, generating approximately 150 kilowatt hours of electricity per revolution. The 16 million kilowatt hydroelectric generator units of Baihetan Hydropower Station are operating at full capacity. Wang Bin, Deputy Director of the Operations Department of the Baihetan Power Plant of Yangtze River Electric Power, said, "Operators are on duty 24 hours a day, sensors collect data in real-time, and the system automatically warns of any abnormalities in operating indicators." "The generator set is like a gyroscope that relies on hydraulic rotation, converting kinetic energy into electrical energy." Kang Yonglin, former Deputy Director of the Baihetan Engineering Construction Department of China Three Gorges Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Three Gorges Group"), introduced that at a speed of 111 revolutions per minute, the coins standing on it remain motionless, and the swing of each bearing during operation is less than 0.1 millimeters. "The overall layout of the generator set, electromagnetic design, and key technologies such as the manufacturing of major components have achieved important innovative results, witnessing China Hydropower's equipment manufacturing and design." "Leading position in installation and other fields." In December 2022, The Baihetan Hydropower Station has achieved full operation and power generation of all units. Looking back from Baihetan, this clean energy corridor has witnessed numerous breakthroughs in China's hydropower technology. The Gezhouba Dam, completed in the 1980s, has a maximum single unit capacity of 170000 kilowatts for hydroelectric generators. As the world's largest water conservancy hub project, the Three Gorges Hydropower Station has conquered the design and manufacturing technology of 700000 kilowatt units. Subsequently, the construction of Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, and Wudongde hydropower stations exceeded 770000, 800000, and 850000 kilowatts of hydroelectric generator unit capacity. Upgrading is not a simple addition, and the difficulty coefficient of each research and development technique increases exponentially. The single machine capacity is moving towards the million kilowatt level, which cannot be separated from the application of a series of new processes and materials, achieving the upgrading of the entire industry chain including hydraulic design, generator ventilation, and overall unit design. The head impact force of a million kilowatt level unit is greater, the speed is faster, and the pressure is higher. Three Gorges Group led a large steel enterprise to develop 800 megapascals of high-strength volute steel
