Exploring the Chinese Civilization in Bamboo Slips

2024-05-14

The recently launched large-scale cultural program "Exploring China through Bamboo Slips and Bamboo Slips" by China Central Television has sparked widespread discussions among audiences and received numerous positive reviews. The program tells the legendary story of the birth, discovery, research, and inheritance of bamboo slips through on-site visits, live dramas, cultural interviews, and other forms, leading the audience to explore the mysteries of Chinese culture firsthand. Before the widespread use of paper, bamboo slips were the main writing medium for Chinese ancestors. In the context of the inheritance and development of Chinese civilization, bamboo slips have an extremely important historical position and value. According to incomplete statistics, over 300000 bamboo slips have been discovered in China so far. Through the words written on bamboo boards, real and vivid historical stories span thousands of years and stand out before our eyes. These precious archaeological relics and the records of passed down literature mutually confirm each other, providing us with intuitive and reliable clues to trace the roots of civilization and culture. "Only the ancestors of the Yin dynasty have books and classics." Bamboo slips are physical witnesses of excellent traditional Chinese culture, but their enormous cultural value has not been fully realized for a considerable period of time. How to make bamboo slips speak up and become a bridge between the public and historical culture is an important issue for bamboo slip researchers and protectors. Gansu is the "hometown of Han bamboo slips" in China. Since the 20th century, more than 60000 bamboo slips have been unearthed, with the majority being Han bamboo slips, with the discovery of Hangquan Han bamboo slips being the climax and peak. In recent years, Gansu has been vigorously promoting the activation and utilization of bamboo slips resources on the basis of continuously strengthening the research and organization of bamboo slips. Last September, the new Gansu Bamboo Slips Museum opened to the public, and over a thousand bamboo slips were unveiled for the first time. With rich exhibition techniques, the museum outlines the details and textures of historical scenes for the audience. By integrating and innovating more ways, we can stimulate the new vitality of bamboo slips resources, promote the study of bamboo slips as a unique study to become a popular and prominent subject, and better inherit the cultural heritage carried by bamboo slips. Unlike other cultural relics with high ornamental value, bamboo slips often have obscure and difficult to understand content, making them a rare skill. In fact, compared to epic works, bamboo slips are more like footnotes to history, outlining specific and intricate ancient life. The sixth episode of "Exploring China with Bamboo Slips" focuses on the Hangquan Han Bamboo Slips. When restoring the scenes of the ancient Silk Road, the protagonist "Hong", a miser from Hangquan, is selected as the protagonist. From the perspective of the most ordinary person, he deeply looks back at the brilliant era of "envoys facing each other on the road, and business travel on the road". Shifu "Hong" was a minor official on the Silk Road over 2000 years ago, with over 70 records of Han bamboo slips preserved. As the person in charge of an important post station on the Silk Road, he has experienced many significant historical events and had contact with many important historical figures. His story also provides a micro window for us to understand and observe history. Ordinary people like Shifu Hong, who have been unknown in history and vividly depicted in bamboo slips, are undoubtedly more capable of inspiring emotional resonance among the public. By delving deeper and expressing more vividly, we can bring warm little characters to life from the lines of bamboo slips, and vividly tell the Chinese stories in the slips. The significance of cultural relics lies not only in enabling modern people to understand the path of Chinese civilization, but also in revealing the cultural spirit, cultural aspirations, and cultural confidence they carry, in order to contribute to the construction of modern Chinese civilization
