Scientists from the Tomsk State Research Institute of Technology and the Siberian State Medical University in Russia have proposed a method of healing oral mucosal wounds using a membrane made of piezoelectric materials. Unlike polytetrafluoroethylene analogues recognized as the "gold standard" worldwide, this membrane not only protects wounds from bacterial invasion, but also promotes tissue regeneration. The relevant research results are published in the journal Applied Materials and Interface. Oral mucosal wounds are a common consequence of dental and surgical procedures. The healing of such wounds may be lengthy and painful, and in some cases, it may form scars, leading to visual and physiological discomfort. Researchers compared two types of polymer membranes: polytetrafluoroethylene membranes used by dentists and membranes used to close oral mucosal wounds, the latter of which is made of a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and tetrafluoroethylene and has piezoelectric properties. Researchers suggest that although the two types of membranes are very similar in structure and physicochemical properties, piezoelectric membranes are more effective in closing oral mucosal wounds. He explained that polytetrafluoroethylene membrane can protect wounds from pathogen invasion, ensuring necessary internal balance, while piezoelectric membrane can not only protect wounds from pathogen invasion, but also promote tissue regeneration and accelerate the healing process. This study can help patients overcome the appearance and physiological discomfort caused by scars on the oral mucosa. Especially, piezoelectric thin films are made from domestically produced polymers in Russia, and their production methods are simple and relatively inexpensive. Under high voltage, the polymer solution is sprayed onto a rotating drum, resulting in a membrane with intertwined fiber structures that can rival multi-layer bandages. (Lai Xin She)
