US Army Initiates Structural Adjustment of Combat Aviation Brigade

2024-05-08

Recently, the US Army Aviation Excellence Center revealed to the outside world that the Army Aviation Corps is undergoing structural adjustments. This organization is mainly responsible for the development and planning of future battlefield aviation forces, and has participated in the formulation of core concepts such as "Army 2030" and "Army 2040". The information disclosed this time indicates that the transformation of the US Army Aviation Brigade will enter a substantive stage. At present, the US Army has a total of 12 combat aviation brigades with similar force structures, each equipped with the same scale of "Apache", "Black Hawk" armed helicopters, "Zhinugan" transport helicopters, and so on. The US Army will restructure the force structure of the Combat Aviation Brigade, forming 8 Heavy Combat Aviation Brigades and 4 Light Combat Aviation Brigades. The former is mainly responsible for conducting combat tasks such as ground strikes and strategic delivery, while the latter is mainly responsible for tasks such as rapid mobility, support, and penetration. According to the nature of the mission, the 8 heavy combat aviation brigades can be divided into four types. Among them, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigades are "joint forced intervention assault" units, with "Apache" armed helicopters as the main combat equipment. The 12th and 16th Combat Aviation Brigades mainly carry out theater support and firepower strike missions, and their configuration is basically consistent with the existing Combat Aviation Brigades. The 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade is a "heavy division assigned aviation force", mainly equipped with "Zhinugan" transport helicopters, and equipped with a certain number of armed helicopters to carry out firepower cover missions. The 1st Cavalry Division Combat Aviation Brigade is a "Joint Forced Intervention Airborne Delivery" unit, mainly responsible for providing the joint forces with Army Motorized Multi Domain Task Force, equipped with the "Black Hawk" armed helicopter and the "Zhinugan" transport helicopter. The four light combat aviation brigades are mainly divided into two categories. The 10th Mountain Division Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade, and 82nd Airborne Division Combat Aviation Brigade are assigned aviation forces to the Light Division. These three brigades will form joint aviation teams according to combat needs to carry out rapid deployment and mobile combat tasks. The 101st Airborne Division Combat Aviation Brigade is used as a breakthrough force, equipped with the Black Hawk armed helicopter and the Zhinugan transport helicopter. In the future, the US military will expand its airborne battalion in the brigade and install at least 32 Chinook transport helicopters. The report states that while adjusting the functional positioning of the Combat Aviation Brigade, the US Army has also optimized its personnel structure. After adjusting the allocation of equipment, each battalion will downsize by 100 to 150 personnel. In the future architecture of the US Army, the Combat Aviation Brigade will become an important component of multi domain combat forces. Foreign media reported that the US Army began its reform with the structural adjustment of its combat aviation brigade, with the intention of "winning the advantage of modern land battlefields" in the context of a competitive strategy among major powers. In the future, the US Army will further accelerate its pace of reform and transformation, and related trends deserve continuous attention. (Lai Xin She)
