Communication | Chinese Enterprises Assist Zimbabwe's Local Industrial Development

Establishing steel mills to promote local industrial development, producing agricultural products to safeguard local food security, and manufacturing products that are affordable for local people... At the 64th Zimbabwe International Trade Fair held at the end of April, the Zimbabwean locally manufactured products launched by Chinese exhibitors became a beautiful scenery at the expo. This year's expo was held in the second largest city of the country, Bravayo, attracting exhibitors from more than 20 countries around the world. Entering the exhibition area, a striking picture of a steel plant reads in English: The largest steel plant in sub Saharan Africa. On November 8, 2023, a Zimbabwean exhibitor was organizing handicrafts at the National Exhibition Area of the 6th CIIE. This is a steel plant invested and built by Dingsen Steel Company, a subsidiary of China Qingshan Holdings Group in Zimbabwe, by Xinhua News Agency reporter Zhang Jiansong. In March of this year, Zimbabwean President Mnangaguva visited this steel plant and had high hopes for it. The factory will hold a production ceremony in June this year, with an annual production capacity of 600000 tons. In addition to meeting Zimbabwe's steel demand, it will also be exported to other regions through the Port of Beira in Mozambique in the future. In recent years, the Zimbabwean government has actively advocated for agricultural self-sufficiency, providing opportunities for the development of agricultural related industries. Liang Zhitao, Chairman of Zimbabwe Feiteng Agriculture Company, who participated in the exhibition, said that there is a shortage of fertilizers in Zimbabwe. He runs a fertilizer plant in Norton, several tens of kilometers away from the capital Harare, and started production in April this year. The daily output of fertilizer is about 300 tons, and he employs more than 20 local employees. Aubert Giri, Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Land, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water Resources and Rural Development of Zimbabwe, said that this fertilizer plant allows local farmers to buy safe fertilizers and hopes to see Feiteng Agriculture's fertilizers promoted nationwide in Zimbabwe. Similarly, settling in Norton, Sunshine Yifeng Ceramics Co., Ltd. has invested and established a factory in the local area, which not only brings high-quality and affordable products, but also provides a large number of employment opportunities for the local area. The sales manager of the company, Cheng Xiaobo, told Xinhua News Agency reporters that the company entered the Zimbabwean market in 2018 and mainly produces products such as tiles. Currently, it employs more than 2000 local employees. On November 6, 2023, Avidens Chakawa from Zimbabwe introduced wooden carving exhibits to visitors at the booth. This is her first time attending the China International Import Expo in Shanghai, and these wood carvings were all made by her brother at home. She wants to find good sales for her brother's wood carvings through the Expo. Xinhua News Agency reporter Fang Zhe said that before the company entered the Zimbabwean market, most of the ceramic tiles here were imported and expensive. After the company was put into operation, the price of ceramic tiles significantly decreased, and the local people were able to afford ceramic tiles for building houses. He said that the products produced by the company are mainly supplied to the local market, and some are exported to countries such as Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia. At the scene, the reporter truly felt that Chinese companies and exhibitors not only invested in setting up factories and expanding their operations locally, but also carefully studied and committed to solving the practical problems of the local people. Chen Qiang, General Manager of AE Electric Appliances Private Limited, told reporters that after graduating from university, he came to Zimbabwe to do home appliance trading and found that most of the local home appliances were imported and expensive European and American OEM products, so he decided to
