"I believe the next 10 million will be achieved soon!"

2024-04-30

At around 16:00 on April 27th, the inbound and outbound traffic volume of the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge exceeded 10 million vehicles. The message instantly brushes across the network. But there is one person who is very calm. "I believe the next 10 million will be achieved soon, definitely not in five years!" On April 27th, Su Quanke was in the office. Su Quanke served as the Chief Engineer of the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge for 19 years. This northwest man swam from a muddy pond in the loess land to the Lingdingyang, from building a small rural bridge of less than 100 meters to the world's longest sea crossing bridge responsible for 55 kilometers. The span of his life is a microcosm of China's bridge construction industry from weak to strong. Su Quanke, a graduate student majoring in bridge engineering, was born in 1962 in Qishan County, Shaanxi Province at the foot of the mountains. If there was any connection between him and water during his youth, it may have been that he just splashed around in the pond at the village entrance and learned how to swim. In 1978, Su Quanke participated in the college entrance examination and was admitted to the nearby Baoji Branch of Shaanxi Normal University, majoring in physics. After graduating from university, Su Quanke became a high school physics teacher. Three years later, Su Quanke applied for graduate studies at Northwestern Polytechnical University, but was not admitted due to the issue of professional enrollment quotas. Su Quanke, carrying his transcript, thought of trying his luck at another school and accidentally stumbled into the gate of Xi'an Highway University, becoming a graduate student majoring in bridge engineering. Su Quanke's work photo. Structural mechanics, elasticity, engineering drawing... Many basic courses related to bridges need to be supplemented by Su Quanke. Some follow undergraduate students in class, while others self-study. Over the course of three years, in addition to his graduate studies, he almost also studied a bridge undergraduate major. The experience of not avoiding problems, but finding every way to solve them shaped Su Quanke's character. During his graduate studies, Su Quanke participated in the construction of his first bridge in his life - a bridge less than 100 meters long on a small river in Dali County, Shaanxi Province. Since then, Su Quanke's dream of building a bridge began to take root and sprout... He, who longed to build a cross sea bridge, first saw the sea in his graduate class. Su Quanke heard for the first time that on the distant coast of the South China Sea, he was planning to build a cross sea bridge - the "Lingdingyang Bridge". At that time, this bridge was only at the conceptual level, but it planted a seed in Su Quanke's heart. This kind of cross sea bridge excites him and keeps him up all night. Many times, in the classroom on the Loess Plateau, his thoughts float to the lonely ocean on an imaginary sailboat. In 1987, after graduating from Su Quanke as a graduate student, he entered the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Transportation Science, and "Lingdingyang" was already within reach. Su Quanke knew very well that in order to achieve his dream of building a cross sea bridge, he had to start with the most basic work - piling, digging, and holding a ruler... After a day, Su Quanke became a "clay man". However, it was not until two years later that the mud man, who longed to build a bridge, saw the sea for the first time. Work photo of Su Quanke (second from left). It's so exciting to see the sea for the first time! When I saw the sea in Shekou, Shenzhen, I asked where Lingdingyang was. They said the sea outside Shekou was Lingdingyang.
