Launch of 5G Lightweight Connectivity Action for 2024

2024-04-25

On April 22, the reporter learned that in order to accelerate the commercial process of 5G Lightweight (RedCap) and connect key links such as 5G RedCap standards, networks, chips, modules, terminals, and applications, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently issued a notice to deploy the 2024 5G Lightweight (RedCap) integration action. The action specifically includes seven key tasks, namely standard foundation construction and achieving 5GRedCap technical standard connectivity; Network first, complete 5GRedCap network connectivity; Upgrade capabilities and accelerate the integration of 5GRedCap chip modules; Rich products promote the integration of 5GRedCap terminals; Demonstration driven, strengthening the integration of 5GRedCap application scenarios; Secure escort and promote the integration of 5GRedCap's security capabilities; Strengthen security to ensure full connectivity of 5GRedCap. 5GRedCap is a 5G technology defined by the International Standards Organization's 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Program). It reduces terminal costs and power consumption by reducing terminal bandwidth, number of transmitting and receiving antennas, and modulation order, which is beneficial for the scale popularization and practical application of 5G commercial networks. According to preliminary industry estimates, lightweight technology can reduce the complexity and cost of 5G terminals by 50-65%. In June 2022, RedCap achieved standard freeze in the 3GPPR17 phase. On October 16th last year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a notice on promoting the evolution and innovative development of 5G Lightweight (RedCap) technology, proposing that by 2025, cities at or above the county level in China will achieve 5G RedCap coverage and a growth of tens of millions of connections. According to relevant deployments, this connectivity action will actively promote the process of 5GRedCap standards. By September 2024, the development of 5GRedCap industry standards based on the 3GPPR17 version will be completed, and a comprehensive testing standard system covering base stations, terminals, universal modules, and other equipment will be constructed. Conduct research on the evolution technology of 5GRedCap for R18 version, and promote the continuous evolution of 5GRedCap technology. In terms of network capacity building, we encourage key cities to upgrade their existing 5G base stations to 5GRedCap, build new 5G base stations to support 5GRedCap, and achieve continuous coverage in over 100 prefecture level and above urban areas by December 2024, and extend coverage to county and urban areas as needed to meet the application needs of wearable devices, smart cars, and other mobile scenarios. In terms of terminal product research and development, over 100 products have been launched around industrial gateways, cameras, automatic guided transport vehicles, etc., meeting the application needs of power, industry, security and other fields. Efforts will be made to break through the research and development innovation of 5GRedCap in consumer electronics products such as smartwatches and in vehicle terminal devices. It is reported that various operators are actively promoting innovation and commercial deployment of 5GRedCap applications. The total scale of 5G base stations supported by China Mobile for 5G RedCap has exceeded 100000, covering 52 cities nationwide, achieving continuous coverage in urban areas. This year, the deployment scale will continue to expand, achieving continuous coverage in county-level cities and above nationwide. China Telecom recently joined forces with China
