According to the Belgian shipowner CMB, this ammonia fuel powered container ship, independently developed and designed by the Shanghai Shipbuilding Research and Design Institute of China Shipbuilding Corporation, will be delivered for use in 2026. This type of ship has a total length of 150 meters and is equipped with ammonia fuel engines, ammonia fuel tanks, and support systems, capable of carrying 1400 standard containers. Compared to ships powered by fossil fuels in the past, this type of ship has reduced its annual carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 95%. During World War II, due to the shortage of oil reserves caused by the war, countries turned their attention to other alternative energy sources, and ammonia fuel ushered in a valuable development window. In the 1940s, Brussels developed ammonia, coal, and gas hybrid engines to maintain public transportation during the middle of the war. However, the development of this engine is aimed at overcoming oil shortages, rather than meeting environmental requirements.
