Supporting 3000 projects and producing thousands of results - Exploring the world's strongest "steady-state strong magnetic field" experimental device

In the western suburbs of Hefei, Anhui, there is a small island with an area of less than 3 square kilometers. This place is surrounded by water on three sides, with a tranquil environment and a unique name - "Science Island". In this place far away from the noise, there is the High Magnetic Field Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the "High Magnetic Field Center"). In August 2022, the steady-state strong magnetic field experimental device (hereinafter referred to as the "experimental device") of the center achieved a significant breakthrough. Its hybrid magnet generated a steady-state magnetic field of 452200 Gauss, breaking the world record held for 23 years. What is the use of a strong magnetic field? What is a steady-state strong magnetic field? What difficulties have been overcome in the construction of experimental equipment? With these questions in mind, recently, a reporter from Science and Technology Daily came to the center of a strong magnetic field to explore the truth. A cutting-edge research platform, Guozhi Heavy Industries enters the lobby on the first floor of the Strong Magnetic Field Center, where a model of an experimental device comes into view. Nearby are neatly placed exhibition boards of various achievements discovered based on steady-state strong magnetic fields. Wang Wenqiang, an engineer at the Strong Magnetic Field Center, conducted a science popularization to reporters that strong magnetic fields are an essential extreme experimental environment for conducting cutting-edge scientific research. In a strong magnetic field, scientists can observe many physical and chemical phenomena that are difficult to observe under daily conditions. According to the duration, strong magnetic fields are divided into pulsed strong magnetic fields and steady-state strong magnetic fields. A steady-state strong magnetic field can remain stable for a certain period of time and value according to scientific experimental requirements. There are mainly three types of magnets that generate steady-state strong magnetic fields: water-cooled magnets, superconducting magnets, and hybrid magnets... "When it comes to steady-state strong magnetic fields, people may feel unfamiliar, but in reality, they have already entered our lives." Wang Wenqiang said, "Magnetic resonance imaging is one of the typical applications of steady-state strong magnetic fields, but its magnetic field is relatively low." As he spoke, the reporter followed Wang Wenqiang up to the experimental device. The experimental setup consists of 10 magnets, including 5 water-cooled magnets, 4 superconducting magnets, and 1 hybrid magnet. In the magnificent experimental hall, four inclined steel columns with a diameter of about half a meter support a giant circular tank that is over 6 meters high, and its overall shape is somewhat similar to a concrete mixing plant. "This is the world record breaking hybrid magnet. The outside is a superconducting magnet with a room temperature aperture of 800 millimeters and a magnetic field strength of 112000 Gauss, while the inside is a water-cooled magnet." Wang Wenqiang explained that although it has a large appearance, the space inside for placing experimental samples is very limited, with a hole diameter of only 32 millimeters. The water-cooled magnet bears enormous electromagnetic stress, equivalent to 7 times the water pressure borne by a ten thousand meter submersible. "Pursuing extremely high magnetic fields is like climbing Mount Everest," Kuang Guangli, the academic director of the Strong Magnetic Field Center and the president of Anhui University, told reporters. "As the fifth stable strong magnetic field experimental device in the world and the first in China, this great tool provides a cutting-edge research platform for researchers." Crossing the river by feeling the stones and striving for excellence for nearly a century, more than 10 achievements related to strong magnetic fields have won the Nobel Prize. Before China, only the United States, France, Netherlands, and Japan had established steady-state strong magnetic field experimental facilities. In 2007, the country approved the construction of this major scientific and technological facility. In 2008, the Strong Magnetic Field Center emerged on Science Island. After years of hard work, the project was completed in 2
