The construction of China's first electric heavy-duty truck type virtual power plant

2024-04-07

On the 6th, it was learned from State Grid Corporation of China that Tangshan, Hebei Province recently launched 200 electric heavy-duty trucks for steel transportation at once. As a result, the number of electric heavy-duty trucks in the region has exceeded 10000, accounting for about one sixth of the total number in the country and ranking first in the country. State Grid Jibei Electric Power has participated in the peak valley regulation of the power grid for the first time with over 100000 electric heavy-duty trucks, regulating over 500000 kilowatt hours of electricity, and has preliminarily built China's first electric heavy-duty truck type virtual power plant. At the end of November 2023, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and eight other departments issued a document to select 15 cities nationwide and launch the first batch of pilot areas for comprehensive electrification of public sector vehicles. Tangshan is a demonstration pilot city for heavy-duty truck electrification. In Tangshan, electric heavy-duty trucks are mainly used in port logistics, mining transportation and other scenarios, with advantages such as low-carbon environmental protection and low operating costs. At present, the region has built 332 heavy-duty truck charging and swapping stations, 2618 charging piles, and a cumulative charging capacity of over 1.4 billion kilowatt hours. The battery of electric heavy-duty trucks has the characteristics of large energy storage unit capacity and high charging power, making it a very high-quality energy storage resource. State Grid Jibei Electric Power has for the first time aggregated electric heavy-duty truck battery resources nationwide, operating in a virtual power plant model. By participating in the electricity auxiliary service market, charging during low load periods of the power grid, storing electricity in batteries, thereby reducing the peak valley difference of the power grid, promoting power supply and demand balance, and new energy consumption. "At present, we have aggregated 11 heavy-duty truck charging and swapping power station battery energy storage resources, with a maximum regulation capacity of 22300 kilowatts. If all the battery resources of Tangshan's heavy-duty truck charging and swapping power stations are aggregated, the expected maximum regulation capacity is 500000 kilowatts, and a monthly increase of about 5 million kilowatt hours of new energy can be generated." said Meng Xiang, Deputy General Manager of State Grid Hebei Tangshan Power Supply Company. At the same time, electric heavy-duty trucks enjoy peak and valley electricity prices for charging. During the low load period of the power grid, the charging price of heavy-duty trucks is the lowest, with a maximum savings of about 0.75 yuan per kilowatt hour. A heavy-duty truck can save up to 315 yuan per kilowatt hour, which is of great value in reducing operating costs. "This year, we will further improve the market-oriented mechanism and enable electric heavy-duty trucks to charge green electricity through green electricity trading. At the same time, we will expand the aggregation scale of virtual power plants, allow more electric heavy-duty trucks to participate in vehicle network interaction, achieve flexible adjustment of electric energy between electric heavy-duty trucks and the power grid, and assist in the construction of a new power system." said Huo Dawei, Director of the Marketing Department of State Grid Hebei Electric Power.
