The research team of Donghua University has made significant breakthroughs in the field of intelligent wearables - the successful development of fibers that can emit light and generate electricity without being plugged in

Have you ever seen fibers that can emit light and generate electricity when worn? What magical features do you expect smart wearable devices to bring? On April 5th, the Advanced Functional Materials Research Group of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Donghua University published an impressive research achievement in Science. This study proposes an energy exchange mechanism based on "human body coupling" and successfully develops a new intelligent fiber that integrates wireless energy collection, information perception, and transmission functions. The intelligent textile woven from this fiber can achieve human-machine interaction functions such as luminous display and touch control without relying on chips and batteries. This breakthrough achievement has opened up new possibilities for intelligent interaction between humans and the environment, and has broad application prospects. Intelligent wearable devices are gradually becoming a part of people's lives. At present, the development of smart fibers is mostly based on the von Neumann architecture, which means that smart textiles still rely on chips and batteries. This makes the volume, weight, and rigidity of the product large, making it difficult to meet people's needs for both functionality and comfort of textiles at the same time. The research team of Donghua University has innovatively proposed a new type of intelligent fiber with a "non von Neumann architecture", which effectively simplifies the hardware structure of wearable devices and smart textiles, and optimizes their wearability. This study integrates functions such as energy collection, information perception, and signal transmission into a single fiber, and weaves them into smart textiles that do not rely on chips and batteries. What is the mystery behind fibers that can emit light and generate electricity without being plugged in? How is the electromagnetic energy scattered in the environment transmitted to fibers in daily life? This study proposes using the human body as a carrier for energy exchange, opening up a convenient energy "channel". The electromagnetic energy originally dissipated in the atmosphere preferentially enters the circuit composed of fibers, the human body, and the earth. It is precisely this principle of "daily use without perception" that promotes a new energy exchange mechanism of "human body coupling". After adding specific functional materials, this new type of fiber will exhibit a magical scene of luminescence and power generation through human touch alone. "This new type of fiber has a three-layer sheath core structure, all of which are commonly used raw materials on the market. The core layer is a fiber antenna (silver plated nylon fiber) that induces alternating electromagnetic fields, the middle layer is a dielectric layer that enhances electromagnetic energy coupling capacity, and the outer layer is an electric field sensitive luminescent layer. The raw material cost is low, and the processing of fibers and fabrics can be achieved using mature processes, which has the ability to produce in large quantities." said Yang Weifeng, the first author of the paper and a doctoral student at the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Donghua University. The study also demonstrated several applications of this intelligent fiber based on the principle of human body coupling: achieving functions such as fiber touch luminescence, fabric display, and wireless command transmission without the use of chips and batteries. Hou Chengyi, a researcher in the State Key Laboratory of Fiber Material Modification of Donghua University, said, "This new fiber can be used in clothing, cloth decoration and other daily textiles. When it contacts with the human body, it can visually sense, interact and even highlight through luminescence, and at the same time, it can generate wireless signals for different postures and movements of the human body, which can then be used for electronic products such as smart appliances
