Rethinking the Category of "Literature" in the Context of New Media

2024-04-03

How to view the way out of literature in the era of new media? As early as the beginning of the reform and opening up, American scholar Alvin Toffler's "The Third Wave" was translated and introduced to China, becoming a best-selling book. This futuristic work asserted at the time that human society, after experiencing thousands of years of agricultural and three hundred years of industrial waves, is accelerating towards a third wave of information. The third wave is committed to building new information fields, and rapidly developing electronic computers will input intelligence into lifeless environments, thereby creating intelligent environments. Of course, the prerequisite is that the computer is required to be able to "think about unimaginable and previously unimaginable things.". This prophecy has become a reality as the 21st century approaches, and human society has entered the post information society or big data era. With the help of electronic computers and the Internet, human beings have started the digital survival mode, which has also changed the creation, dissemination and acceptance mechanism of literature, especially the interactive communication mode between authors and readers. As a result, online literature has risen rapidly, and the living space of traditional literature has been squeezed. In the new media era based on electronic media such as the Internet and virtual reality, where is the way out for literature? Some people say that the way out lies in online literature, while traditional literature will inevitably dissipate. This binary opposition approach is clearly not advisable, as the development of online literature has not only failed to replace traditional literature, but has also shown a trend of continuous integration with traditional literature. This is not only reflected in the fact that online literature does not reject traditional paper media dissemination, but also in the shift of online literature from "suspenseful" writing to "local" writing. Therefore, the realism factor of online literature continues to strengthen, indicating the possibility of the convergence of the two types of literature in the future. The problem lies in the fact that the once glorious online literature is now facing the impact of short videos and the challenge posed by artificial intelligence to the entire literary family. Some people are worried about the future of literature, not optimistic about its prospects in the context of new media, and doubt whether literature has the ability to continue to combine with high technology. After all, compared to audiovisual arts such as film and television, music, painting, dance, etc., the combination of literature based on language and writing with high technology is more difficult, which will inevitably hinder the survival of literature in the context of new media. Another important reason is market factors. From the perspective of market share, that is, from the sales of literary works, the best-selling traditional literary works are not significant, and to this day, Lu Yao's "Ordinary World" still occupies the top of various literary rankings. Keeping the door of the Hundred Flowers Garden of Literature open forever is still a major issue in China's academic community regarding the concept of literature. There is a huge divergence between the literary concepts in the minds of the general public and those in academia. For example, the popular online literature of the new century has been excluded from the literary ideal by the academic community. For example, the works of modern and contemporary popular literature writers, including Zhang Henshui's social romance novels and Jin Yong's new martial arts novels, have been sought after by the public, but the attitude of the academic community is still unclear. There are also many old style poems that continue the thousand year history of Chinese poetry, and there are many enthusiasts. The sales of "Chinese Poetry" magazine also far exceed that of general new poetry publications, but many people in the academic community still refuse to recognize old style poetry as literature. The so-called "orthodox literature"
