Active ports reflect sustained economic growth

2024-04-03

Recently, the media learned from a special press conference held by the Ministry of Transport that in 2023, ports in the Yangtze River Delta region completed a total cargo throughput of 7.04 billion tons and a container throughput of 110 million TEUs, accounting for 41.5% and 38.5% of the national total, respectively. Overall, China's port comprehensive efficiency ranks among the top in the world, with Shanghai Port's container throughput and Ningbo Zhoushan Port's cargo throughput both maintaining the world's first place for many consecutive years. According to relevant data, among the top ten ports in terms of world port throughput and container throughput, China holds 8 and 7 seats respectively. Among them, in 2023, the container throughput of Shanghai Port reached a new high, leading the world for 14 consecutive years, achieving 49.158 million TEUs; Ningbo Zhoushan Port has become the third port in the world with an annual container volume exceeding 35 million boxes. China attaches great importance to port construction and actively expands effective investment in ports. Significant achievements have been made in port infrastructure construction, and the trend of large-scale berths in coastal ports is more evident. According to statistics, by the end of 2022, there were 21323 berths for port production in China, an increase of 456 compared to the end of the previous year. Among them, there are 1468 specialized berths with a capacity of 10000 tons or above, an increase of 41 compared to the previous year. The port throughput continues to grow rapidly, and production efficiency steadily improves. In 2022, the total port cargo throughput was 15.685 billion tons, of which foreign trade cargo throughput was 4.607 billion tons and container throughput was 296 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 4.7%. In recent years, major ports around the world have vigorously promoted the construction of smart ports, and the level of digitalization has become one of the important indicators to measure the core competitiveness of a port. In terms of smart port construction, China's automated container terminals have both been built and are currently in a leading position in the world. The digitalization level of national port and waterway infrastructure has been comprehensively improved. As an international hub, the intelligent construction process of coastal ports is relatively fast, greatly promoting the efficiency of China's ports and playing a very important role in stabilizing the industrial chain and supply chain. In addition, the innovation of maritime services in China has further promoted the high-quality development of regional integration. Improve the smart maritime supervision system through technologies such as big data and cloud computing, and promote a new transformation in maritime supervision and services. The Work Plan for Innovating Maritime Services to Support the High Quality Development of the Yangtze River Delta Integration (2023-2025) clearly proposes to take the integration of maritime supervision and service guarantee in the Yangtze River Delta as the breakthrough point, and to accelerate the transformation and development of maritime services by focusing on the construction of a comprehensive water transportation management system, serving the high-quality economic and social development of the Yangtze River Delta region. Maritime service innovation emphasizes a sense of overall situation, breaks down regional barriers, further promotes cost reduction, quality improvement, and efficiency enhancement in transportation and logistics, and promotes high-quality development of the Yangtze River Delta integration in a larger scope, wider field, and deeper level. Chinese ports have the characteristics of large scale and high efficiency, and the leading world rankings demonstrate China's strong presence in international trade
