The glide guidance kit equips aviation bombs with "eyes" and "wings"

In the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a glide guided bomb kit of the Russian air force attracted attention. This Universal Gliding and Guidance Kit (UMPK) can upgrade multiple types of unguided aerial bombs to guided bombs with precision strike capabilities. Non guided aerial bombs have a simple structure, high power, convenient use, and low cost, which can better meet the needs of mechanized warfare, such as strong firepower damage, wide battlefield range, and high ammunition consumption. There are many stocks in major countries around the world, and Russia has even more. To improve the hit rate, when using unguided aerial bombs, fighter jets usually use close range aerial delivery. The development of modern air defense systems has led to a sharp increase in the danger of aircraft deployed using this method. To ensure the safety of the aircraft, most of these unguided aerial bombs are shelved. On the contrary, the use of air to ground strike ammunition that can be remotely dropped, accurately hit, and has better damage effects continues to increase. The Russian military "tied" UMPK kits to unguided aerial bombs, equipped them with "eyes" and "wings", so as to "re launch" these larger inventory of aerial bombs. The US military also has similar kits. It was developed for the Mk 80 series unguided bombs. By installing this precision guidance kit on the tail of the missile, the Mk 80 series unguided bombs became JDAM guided bombs. This kit consists of guidance control components, tail control rudder surfaces, etc. The guidance and control components are the core components of the Jedam guided bomb, including GPS receivers, inertial measurement devices, mission computers, and power modules. Later on, extended range missiles with gliders and laser guided kits with laser guidance heads also appeared, making the Jeddam guided bomb one of the main ammunition of the US military. Unlike the kit developed by the US military for the Mk 80 series unguided bombs, the UMPK kit consists of folding wings and tail wings, glider body, control components, satellite guidance equipment, and more. Due to the fact that unguided aerial bombs in Russia are usually cast in one piece and cannot be replaced with tails like in the United States, Russian researchers have developed an integrated UMPK kit that can be fastened to bombs based on this. Although the appearance is not as exquisite as the kits used by the US military, the role of the UMPK kit cannot be underestimated. After pairing with unguided aerial bombs, their use is not easily affected by weather and they can glide further, allowing them to be dropped beyond the range of some ground to air missiles of their opponents. After installation, unguided aerial bombs will achieve higher accuracy and enhance their strike effectiveness. With the characteristics of no heat source and the ability to change the trajectory of bombs, it will be difficult to intercept bombs paired with UMPK kits. More importantly, this glide guided bomb kit is suitable for aviation bombs of different weight levels, which means there will be more types of aviation bombs that will experience a sudden increase in power as a result. However, the glide guided bomb kit also has drawbacks, such as the need to set target position information and other parameters in advance on the ground, which can only be used to strike fixed ground targets, high dependence on satellite signals, and the possibility of being deceived and interfered with. However, compared to the development of new missiles, this approach of developing kits for unguided aerial bombs requires less investment and is quite cost-effective
