Salute to the pioneers of the overseas Chinese community! Exploring the Historical and Cultural Context of Guangzhou

2024-03-26

On March 26th, the 2024 Guangzhou Inheritance and Promotion of Red Culture Series of "Hero Flower Blooms Hero City" - I Have a Date with the Motherland, Salute to Overseas Chinese Pioneers, Story Sharing Conference, and Youth Art Creation Competition (Yuexiu District) were launched at the Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Museum. This event is guided by the United Front Work Department of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee (Municipal Overseas Chinese Office) and the Municipal Overseas Chinese Federation, and jointly organized by the United Front Work Department of the Yuexiu District Committee (District Overseas Chinese Affairs Bureau), the District Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau, the District Overseas Chinese Federation, and the Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Museum. More than 100 people from various units, overseas Chinese schools, overseas Chinese individuals, and media representatives in Guangzhou listened on site to the glorious deeds of the pioneers in the overseas Chinese community who tirelessly fought, witnessed the continuous inheritance of the spirit of overseas Chinese, and inspired the pursuit of working together to achieve the Chinese Dream. At the event, we will tell the stories of pioneers in the overseas Chinese community and inherit the spirit of overseas Chinese. For a long time, overseas Chinese have actively promoted the exchange and mutual learning of Chinese culture with cultures of other countries around the world, and are the civil ambassadors for harmonious exchanges between the Chinese people and people from all over the world. During the event, four storytellers shared the stories of four overseas Chinese pioneers with the on-site guests, paying tribute to the pioneers. "The 'Boxer Indemnity' is a shame, and Mr. Liang Cheng's recovery of the Boxer Indemnity for promoting education is the beginning of national self-improvement. Huang Ping, the founder of the 'Honest Pillar' team of Yelu Film and Television Culture Communication Company and a Tsinghua student, passionately tells the story of Liang Cheng, an outstanding patriotic diplomat in the late Qing Dynasty, and Tsinghua University.". Liang Cheng was born in Huangpu Village, Haizhu District, Guangzhou today and was one of the fourth batch of children studying in the United States. In 1903, Liang Cheng was appointed as the Ambassador to the United States. After learning of the American Super Sokoku indemnity, he tried his best to mediate and after several years of urging the United States to reduce the indemnity, he finally succeeded. The refund of the Boxer Rebellion facilitated the establishment of the predecessor of Tsinghua University, the Tsinghua School, and promoted the development of modern education in China. The story of Yang Pao'an, a pioneer in the dissemination of Marxism, told by Huang Ping in "The Outstanding Patriotic Diplomat Liang Cheng" is equally touching. Ren Xinyu, the commentator at the Third National Congress of the Communist Party of China Memorial Hall, introduced that Yang Pao'an was an overseas Chinese in Japan who had been exposed to Marxism and various Western social ideologies. After returning to China, he actively participated in the anti imperialist and patriotic struggle in Guangzhou, and was the first person in the South China region to systematically introduce Marxism. On July 25, 1931, Yang Pao'an was arrested and imprisoned by Kuomintang spies. In prison, Yang Pao'an wrote a suicide letter to his family, telling them that he was prepared to use his life to interpret his faith and reminding the children to inherit his will. He also wrote "On the Night Before Death, Showcasing Prison Friends" to encourage his fellow inmates and inspire them to maintain their revolutionary spirit. Ren Xinyu tells the story of "My Original Aspiration is Like a Rock in Yang Pao'an": "My family is what I love, my parents and siblings are what I love, but the shattered motherland is what I miss and love..." Li Simin, a lecturer at the Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Museum, recites the "Confession Letter" with deep emotion, telling the story of the heroic deeds of the South Chinese mechanical worker heroine Bai Xuejiao in the war to save the country. Bai Xuejiao was a wealthy girl who resided in Penang, Malaysia. In 1939, she resolutely returned to her home country to fight against Japan during the national crisis and became a member of the Yunnan Myanmar Highway Engineering Team. The anti Japanese family letter "Confession Letter" written by her before departure was published in the newspaper, which moved many overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia and inspired countless young people to go to the national crisis together. After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, Bai Xuejiao joined the CPC, took root in Guangzhou and devoted herself to education, taking the dissemination of heroic stories as her own responsibility
