Through the joint efforts of Chinese and New Zealand engineers, a new breakthrough has been made in the study of building seismic resistance, which will strengthen global earthquake preparedness. According to the New Zealand "Xiangyin" website, this collaboration was conducted by Chinese engineers from the New Zealand side and the International Cooperation Joint Laboratory of Earthquake Engineering at Tongji University in Shanghai under the ROBUST project. The collaboration aims to reduce the degree of building damage during earthquakes and set new benchmarks for earthquake resilience. Under the ROBUST project, experts from both countries tested various earthquake recovery technologies. At present, the collaboration involves several research institutions in New Zealand and has received support from the New Zealand Earthquake Commission. Dr. Natalie Balfour, the research director of the New Zealand Earthquake Commission, emphasized that the project demonstrates how different funding sources can come together to support world leading research, with the ultimate goal of creating safer and more resilient communities. The cooperation between New Zealand and China not only validates existing engineering solutions, but also promotes the exchange of knowledge and ideas, paving the way for innovative earthquake recovery methods.
