According to the Pakistani Constitution, the Prime Minister of the government serves a term of 5 years and is eligible for re-election. This is Shabaz's second time serving as Prime Minister of Pakistan, and he served as Prime Minister from April 2022 to August 2023. In August 2023, Alvi approved the dissolution of the National Assembly, after which Pakistan entered a caretaker government period. On February 8, 2024, Pakistan held a vote for the new National Assembly elections. The vote counting results show that no political party or independent candidate group has individually won a majority of seats in this year's National Assembly elections. After several rounds of negotiations in recent days, the main political party in Pakistan, the Muslim League (Sharif faction), and the People's Party, have reached a consensus to form a coalition government and unanimously elect Shabaz as the new Prime Minister of the government.
