5G-A stimulates new growth in the information and communication industry

The 2024 World Mobile Congress recently concluded in Barcelona, Spain. At this grand event in the information and communication industry, which has a "wind vane" significance, about 300 participating Chinese companies showcased innovative products and technologies, becoming a dazzling landscape. While bringing more Chinese wisdom and solutions to the construction of the industry ecosystem, it also leads the direction of the information and communication industry. The 5G-A entered the commercial era with lifelike naked eye 3D, unmanned driving resembling a replica of a sci-fi movie scene, and innovative generative artificial intelligence applications... At this conference, the intelligent products and technological creativity exhibited by Chinese companies were very eye-catching. Behind these products and technologies, a network infrastructure with larger bandwidth, lower latency, and higher security is needed as support. Therefore, 5G-A (5G-Advanced, also known as 5.5G) has become one of the hot topics of attention at this conference. As of the end of 2023, over 300 5G networks have been deployed globally, covering nearly half of the population. 5G is also the fastest developing intergenerational technology among all, with global 5G user growth rate seven times that of 4G during the same period. In the past five years of commercial use, the global 5G user base has exceeded 1.5 billion. The industry generally believes that 2024 is the first year of 5G-A commercialization, and operators, industry chains, equipment, and standards will all mature in 2024. "With the first half of 5G development coming to an end, the telecommunications industry is facing challenges such as 5G user growth reaching the boundary, slower traffic growth, slower revenue growth, and the emergence of killer applications." Li Qiang, General Manager of China Mobile's Planning and Construction Department, stated that China Mobile will build a 5G-A business model from 2024, improve infrastructure, promote application scenarios, strengthen industrial ecology, and strive to achieve full commercial use of 5G-A by the end of 2026. Liang Baojun, Deputy General Manager of China Unicom, also stated that China Unicom is actively promoting the networking pilot and model construction of 5G-A. In the past year, China Unicom has achieved technological innovations such as RedCap and passive IoT, and completed the country's first 5G-A scale networking demonstration in Beijing in January this year, marking China Unicom's 5G Capital innovation project entering a new stage of 5G-A.
