A report released by the United Nations Environment Programme's Convention on the Protection of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) on the 12th pointed out that the number of species of migratory animals worldwide is decreasing and their extinction risk is increasing. CMS is an international convention promoted by the United Nations Environment Programme in 1979 aimed at protecting migratory species, with its secretariat located in Bonn, Germany. The 14th Conference of the Parties to the CMS was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from the 12th to the 17th, and this report was also released at the opening ceremony of the conference. This report states that although the survival status of some migratory species listed in the CMS has improved, the population of nearly half of them is declining, 22% of species are on the brink of extinction, and almost all fish species listed in the CMS are facing the threat of extinction; Migratory species on a global scale, including those not listed in the CMS, are facing increasing extinction risks; 75% of the species listed in CMS are affected by habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation, and a significant number of species are affected by intentional and accidental capture. While issuing warnings, the report proposes priority action recommendations, including efforts to address illegal and unsustainable capture of migratory animals and their accidental catch, increasing actions to identify, protect, connect, and effectively manage important habitats of migratory species, and increasing efforts to address climate change and various pollution issues. CMS Executive Secretary Amy Frenkel said that when migratory species cross national borders, their survival depends on the efforts of all countries along the way.
