The EU is actively developing supercomputers - the latest computers will be opened to European users starting from March

The European Commission recently released a statement stating that the latest world-class supercomputer in Europe, MareNostrum5, has been built at the Supercomputing Center in Barcelona, Spain and will be open to users in the European scientific and industrial communities starting from March 2024. As one of the 10 most powerful supercomputers in the world, this computer is specifically designed to solve complex scientific problems, with a peak performance of 3.14 billion floating-point operations per second. It will support research in Europe in areas such as drug and vaccine development, simulated virus transmission, climate change, engineering, materials science, and earth science. According to the Spanish newspaper Abesai, this supercomputer uses the most advanced accelerator chip currently available, which will assist in the development of artificial intelligence and improve the performance of large-scale artificial intelligence language models in Europe. Meanwhile, the computer is completely powered by sustainable energy, and the heat generated during operation will be used to heat the building, making it one of the most environmentally friendly supercomputers in Europe. Supercomputers are crucial for scientific research, especially in the field of artificial intelligence, which has broad application prospects. In recent years, the European Union has actively developed supercomputers to promote digital transformation, enhance regional technological level and industrial competitiveness. As early as 2018, the European Commission and member states launched the "European High Performance Computing Common Plan", which coordinates the deployment and operation of world-class high-performance computing and data infrastructure within the EU, and concentrates resources on building the European high-performance computing ecosystem. In 2019, the European Commission selected 8 locations among member states, including Barcelona, to build world-class supercomputing centers, with the aim of making Europe a top supercomputing region in the world. At present, at least half of the components of the European supercomputers under construction are based on local European technology.
