Beware of carbon monoxide poisoning when brewing tea in a furnace, seek medical attention in a timely manner, and be alert to delayed onset encephalopathy

Recently, there have been multiple incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning across the country, mostly caused by boiling tea or hot pot in relatively enclosed environments. Chang Yufei, Deputy Director of the Emergency Department of Beijing Ditan Hospital, said that the number of people suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning has significantly increased in winter. Once patients suspect that they have carbon monoxide poisoning, they should seek medical attention immediately and be alert to delayed onset encephalopathy that may occur after false recovery. Recently, the emergency department of Ditan Hospital admits one to two patients with carbon monoxide poisoning every week. Chang Yufei said that there are fewer and fewer residents using coal for heating, and people's vigilance towards carbon monoxide poisoning has decreased. "Some patients who are boiling meat in a copper pot in a closed private room may not realize they have been exposed to carbon monoxide until they experience dizziness. In fact, boiling tea in a furnace, washing lamb, using a gas water heater, etc. can all lead to carbon monoxide poisoning." Chang Yufei reminded that the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are sometimes not typical enough, There may be mild symptoms but severe poisoning. "Mild patients believe that taking a break is enough and there is no need to go to the hospital, but there is actually a risk involved." Chang Yufei explained that carbon monoxide poisoning has the possibility of "false recovery and brain damage": after a period of "false recovery" after the poisoning symptoms have significantly improved, a series of "delayed onset encephalopathy" symptoms such as daydreaming and memory loss may appear. "If not treated in a timely manner, about 10% of patients will experience neurological damage." Chang Yufei suggests that citizens should seek medical attention as soon as they discover suspicious symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, such as dizziness, drowsiness, and palpitations, to avoid irreversible damage. In daily life, attention should also be paid to preventing poisoning: carbon monoxide alarms should be installed indoors, and safety facilities such as chimneys and ventilation windows should be installed when using coal fires; Correctly use gas water heaters and avoid using outdated direct discharge and flue water heaters; Regularly open the windows for ventilation while driving, and do not let the engine idle for a long time.
