Understanding the physical condition and family background of employees is beneficial for maintaining their health

2023-12-28

Recently, the Sports Science Research Institute of the General Administration of Sport of China released a report on the physical fitness status of typical workers in the "Ten Thousand Mile Journey" in 2023, which sampled and tested the physical fitness of employees engaged in traditional heavy industry, high-tech industry, and emerging service industry, taking an important step towards the "bottom line" work of physical health for in-service workers. Over a period of 7 months, the "Ten Thousand Mile Journey" activity visited 22 enterprises in 10 provinces (districts, cities) across the country, conducting physical fitness tests on nearly 10000 employees, and finally producing this report. The common practice of maintaining employee health in the past was to focus on occupational diseases in disease categories, and when promoting health projects, specific units were usually the main focus. In the past, employee physical fitness surveys and health maintenance were also conducted in some industries and regions, but the scale was generally small. However, the "Ten Thousand Mile Journey" activity for physical fitness testing of enterprise employees launched in May this year has further expanded in scale and scope, allowing for a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the "background" of the physical fitness of Chinese employees from a global perspective. The fact has proven that this "ten thousand mile trip" is indeed worth it, and the health data and conclusions obtained have high quality and reference value. On the positive side, the overall physical condition of Chinese employees is relatively good, with three-quarters of employees achieving a comprehensive evaluation of qualified or above physical fitness, and one-third of employees achieving excellent or good levels. In addition, the comprehensive physical fitness level of non manual workers is better than that of manual workers, and the comprehensive physical fitness level of female workers and younger group workers is better than that of male workers and older group workers, respectively. On the other hand, the issues discovered through this physical fitness test cannot be ignored. For example, whether engaged in manual labor or non manual labor, the "two poles" of overweight, obesity, and underweight are both worthy of vigilance; The common problem of poor cardiovascular endurance leads to an increased risk of chronic diseases. In addition, the lower limb strength of express delivery workers is relatively weak, while insufficient upper limb strength of technology and office workers may lead to wrist pain, "mouse hand", excessive tension of cervical and shoulder muscles, causing health problems such as cervical spondylosis and shoulder periarthritis. These should all be highly valued. Understanding the physical condition and family background of employees is to better manage household chores. Similar tests can serve as important references for maintaining employee health. In addition to closely integrating industry characteristics and being more targeted in preventing occupational diseases, emphasis should also be placed on addressing common health challenges faced by employees. For example, the "two poles" of overweight, obesity, and underweight are particularly evident in the workplace. Many employees have unreasonable dietary structures, lack of exercise, and excessive weight loss, which are important reasons for this phenomenon. These bad habits should be included in the priority of promoting employee health. Employers lack specific plans and actions in promoting health. Therefore, in addition to continuously promoting healthy work and lifestyle, and regularly organizing physical examinations for employees, employers should also take measures such as increasing sports facilities, giving employees more time to exercise, and cleaning up unhealthy "overtime culture" to create favorable conditions and atmosphere for improving the health level of employees.
