Academicians and Experts Discuss the "Big Food Concept and Food Security"

2023-12-13

At the Institute of Germplasm Resources and Biotechnology, Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences, researchers stored a plate of corn germplasm resources. "The diversified food supply system is a reflection of the big food concept to ensure food security. Building a diversified food supply system, solving the problem of eating, and the fundamental way out lies in technology." Recently, the 2023 China Agriculture and Rural Science and Technology Development Forum and China Modern Agriculture Development Forum held an academician report on "Big Food Concept and Food Security" in Nanjing. At the report meeting, multiple academicians and experts expressed their opinions around the theme. Biological breeding technology is an important means to ensure food security. "In 2022, China's grain imports will account for 19% of China's total grain output in the whole year. Therefore, it is increasingly important to continuously improve the variety and quality of food." Wan Jianmin, an academician of the CAE Member, pointed out that "in China, the contribution rate of improved varieties to production increase is 45%. However, in developed countries, this figure has reached more than 60%. Developing biological breeding technology is an important means to ensure food security. We need to accelerate the original breakthrough in biological breeding, including the comprehensive system layout of interdisciplinary fields, increase the research and development of basic algorithms and models such as biological data and big data intelligent design, and promote the in-depth integration and application of biological breeding and application scenarios." Food manufacturing faces many new tasks. Specifically, this includes issues related to food resources, improving food processing efficiency, and enriching nutrition and flavor. "We believe that we should improve manufacturing efficiency, replace food manufacturing units that do not meet low-carbon and other related requirements, and reconstruct the processing process." Chen Jian, an academician of the CAE Member, said, "Biotechnology is reshaping the world, and the food industry is entering a big era. We need to cross integrate biotechnology and the food industry in an all-round way to promote the development of the food industry." To establish and practice the concept of "big food", and firmly end China's rice bowl, we are required to look at the overall situation and the long term, starting from the entire natural ecosystem, to explore more abundant food source channels and more reasonable nutrition diet programs. How to improve soybean production capacity through resource research? Gai Junyi, an academician of the CAE Member, pointed out that "China is a big country of soybean resources, and how to make full use of these resources remains to be explored. At present, there are still many problems that have not been solved. For example, there is no absolute resistance gene for soybean leaf mold root rot. According to past work experience, we should make full use of the natural variation generated over thousands of years in the research of resources, and combine marker assisted technology to create new germplasm materials. In the future, we need to strengthen the research and focus on innovation." To ensure food security, we should establish a big agricultural view and a big food view. Facility agriculture can promote the effective supply of meat, eggs, milk, vegetables, fruits, and aquatic products, better meeting the increasingly diverse food needs of the people. Facility agriculture can meet people's demands for a better life. Taking vegetables as an example, food is the foundation of human survival, and vegetables are an important component of food supply. Generally speaking, each person needs to eat 300-500 grams of vegetables per day. If we calculate based on a daily intake of 500 grams per person and a population of 1.4 billion, the country needs to consume 700000 tons of vegetables per day. Therefore, we need to
