Guarding the Clear Water of this Reservoir - Exploring the Water Source Area of Danjiangkou Reservoir Area in the Middle Route of the South to North Water Diversion Project

2023-12-13

Two drifting boats were slowly sailing on the rippling blue water, and the workers were using tools such as nets, rakes, and bamboo poles to salvage floating objects such as branches and plastic bottles on the surface of the water. This is a scene that the reporter saw early on the 12th at the Danjiangkou Reservoir, the water source of the South to North Water Diversion Project. These drifters come from Xichuan County, Nanyang City, Henan Province, where half of the water surface of Danjiangkou Reservoir is located. After docking, workers will classify these floating objects and transport them to the garbage disposal site. Since the establishment of the floating debris removal team in 2013, Xichuan County has cleared a total of 130000 tons of various floating debris, and this is just one of the tasks of guarding this reservoir of clear water. The middle route of the South to North Water Diversion Project diverts water from the head gate of the Taocha Canal in the Danjiangkou Reservoir into the canal. The south water flows for thousands of miles, moistening the Henan Hebei Tianjin Beijing region. On December 12, 2014, the middle route of the South to North Water Diversion Project was fully opened to water; Over the past 9 years, the cumulative water diversion has exceeded 60 billion cubic meters, and the four provinces and cities have directly benefited more than 108 million people. The relevant person in charge of the South to North Water Diversion Project Management Department of the Ministry of Water Resources introduced that since the comprehensive opening of water, the water quality of the water supply in the middle line of the South to North Water Diversion has remained stable at or above the Class II standard for surface water. This also confirms the journalist's greatest feeling during this visit: in Xichuan, the biggest thing is to prevent water pollution. The relevant person in charge of Xichuan Branch of Nanyang Ecological Environment Bureau told reporters that Xichuan County has established more than 2400 "water protection personnel" public welfare positions and an 83 person professional cleaning team. In addition, 14 sewage treatment plants, 12 garbage treatment plants, 175 small-scale rural sewage treatment facilities have been built, and 12 automatic water quality monitoring stations have been built in the five major rivers and Danjiangkou Reservoir, Ensure that the water quality injected into the Danjiangkou Reservoir meets Class II standards or above. Maintaining good water quality not only requires pollution control, but also requires a good ecology throughout the entire watershed. There is a local saying in Xichuan: "If the Danjiang River is not clear, let's see if the mountains are green." However, making the mountains in Xichuan "green" is not an easy task. Xichuan is a typical karst landform area, with a total area of 1.25 million acres of barren mountains and rocky desertification in the county, of which 550000 acres are severe rocky desertification, concentrated around the Danjiangkou Reservoir. The hills around Gejiagou Village in Madeng Town are part of this landform. "This landform has poor site conditions, severe soil erosion, and difficulty in afforestation," Li Guofeng, who has been a forest ranger for 19 years, told reporters. In 2020, the county applied for a national reserve forest project to treat several heavily rocky hills around Gejiagou Village. "First, use machinery to dig large holes in the stones, then transport soil and fill them in. Plant one tree in each hole. If mechanical operations are not possible, find areas with more soil in the gaps between the stones or fill them with soil to plant trees. Many machinery, soil, and tree seedlings are transported to the mountains by humans, donkeys, and other means, because some mountains have no roads at all." When talking about how to plant trees and forests, Li Guofeng opened his mouth. At present, all 6000 acres of rocky desertification hills in Gejiagou National Reserve Forest Base have been planted with trees. Rows of torch pine and cypress trees dyed green one mountain after another, standing on the mountaintop and looking down, half of the green mountains and half of the clear water. And this is just one of the 12 afforestation sites for rocky desertification in Xichuan County, which has completed a high standard of 382000 acres of rocky desertification control. Once the tree species are good, it is necessary to maintain and manage them well.
