The first revelation of nuclear fission in the universe

Elements above iron in the periodic table are believed to have occurred during catastrophic explosions such as the merger of two neutron stars or in rare supernovae. The latest research suggests that fission may occur in the universe during the production of heavy elements. By sorting through data on various elements in ancient stars, researchers have discovered potential features of fission and indicated that nature may produce overweight atomic nuclei that exceed the heaviest elements in the periodic table. This research result was published in the latest issue of the journal Science. Using the latest observation results, researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States have found a correlation between the nuclei of lightweight precision metals such as silver and rare earth atoms such as europium. When one group of elements rises, the corresponding elements in the other group also increase, and their correlation is positive. Researchers suggest that this situation occurs between different stars, and the only possible way is that there is a consistent process in the formation of heavy elements. The team tested all possibilities, and fission is the only explanation that can reproduce this trend. This is also the first evidence of fission occurring in the universe. The study also suggests that elements with an atomic mass (proton plus neutron number) of 260 (heavier than the heaviest element on the periodic table) may exist. The team developed a fission model for predicting and guiding observations. These models allow physicists to interpret experiments and fill in data in the absence of measurements. Compared to measurement data, these models perform very well, so their inference is more reliable without measurement data. Studying the formation of heavy elements requires nuclear input from both short-lived and long-lived species.
