After more than two years of construction, the 2 million kilowatt photovoltaic desertification control project in Kubuqi, Mengxi Base, jointly invested and constructed by Three Gorges Energy and Elion Clean Energy, has recently achieved full capacity grid connection in Hangjin Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia. This is also currently the largest single scale ecological photovoltaic desertification control project in China. The project produces an average of 4.1 billion kilowatt hours of green electricity per year, saving 1.23 million tons of standard coal combustion, reducing 3.198 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, 29500 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions, 8600 tons of nitrogen oxide emissions, and 12300 tons of smoke and dust emissions per year. The 2 million kilowatt photovoltaic desertification control project in Kubuqi, Mengxi Base started construction on October 16, 2021, covering an area of 100000 acres with a total investment of 11.15 billion yuan. The construction includes a 2 million kilowatt photovoltaic field, a 400000 kilowatt/80000 kilowatt hour energy storage system, three 220kV booster stations, and a 100000 acre desert ecological construction project. According to Zhao Jinquan, the project leader of China Three Gorges Group stationed in Kubuqi, the 2 million kilowatt photovoltaic sand control project in Kubuqi, Mengxi Base adopts a three-dimensional ecological photovoltaic sand control mode of "double-sided power generation on the board, double-layer ecology under the board, and double-layer aquaculture between boards". By using double glass modules, double-sided power generation on the board can be achieved, which can increase power generation by 5% to 10%; Planting high-quality forage and medicinal herbs under the board to achieve three-dimensional ecological planting; The board adopts the "livestock and poultry grass coupling" technology of first raising chickens and then sheep to control desertification, and implements the return of livestock and poultry manure to the field for sand control and soil improvement. To comprehensively achieve the multiple benefits of "photovoltaic+", including power generation on the board, planting under the board, inter board aquaculture, desertification control and soil improvement, and rural revitalization. In order to ensure the smooth grid connection and power generation of the 2 million kilowatt photovoltaic desertification control new energy project in Kubuqi, Inner Mongolia Power Group invested 716 million yuan in the construction of the Gushanliang 500 kV transmission and transformation project and the supporting 220 kV transmission line project in the early stage. Song Congyue, Deputy General Manager of Ordos Power Supply Company, stated that in the face of the large-scale integration of new energy into the grid in Ordos City, we will build a strong 500 kV "field shaped" backbone network in the Yellow River Bay, build an intelligent and flexible distribution network, promote the research and layout of energy storage planning on the grid side, carry out the integration of "source, grid, load, and storage" and intelligent scheduling construction, enrich the means of grid peak regulation, and continuously meet the development needs of regional new energy. The 2 million kilowatt photovoltaic desertification control project in Kubuqi, Mengxi Base is one of the first large-scale wind and photovoltaic base projects to start construction in China during the 14th Five Year Plan period. It is also the largest three-dimensional ecological photovoltaic desertification control project in China in terms of complementary advantages and strong cooperation between central enterprises and private enterprises. The construction of the project has effectively driven local economic development and employment of farmers and herdsmen. During the construction period, the project attracted over 1000 farmers and herdsmen for employment. During the operation period, the project will adopt a rural revitalization mutual aid model of "company+farmers+cooperatives", and it is expected to steadily absorb 500 people annually to engage in component cleaning, under board crop planting and management, animal husbandry and breeding, and other work.
