Wang Yi Meets with UN Secretary General Guterres

2023-11-29

On November 28th local time, Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with UN Secretary General Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York. Wang Yi stated that the world is focused on the Palestinian Israeli conflict and pays attention to the role and actions of the United Nations. On the issue of the Palestinian Israeli conflict, China has always firmly stood on the side of peace, human conscience, and international law, supporting the unique and irreplaceable role played by the United Nations and the Secretary General himself in resolving the Palestinian Israeli conflict. As the rotating presidency of the Security Council this month, China maintains close communication with Arab countries and relevant parties, and regards the Palestinian Israeli conflict as the core and priority issue of the Security Council. The Chinese side also received a collective visit from Arab and Islamic foreign ministers to China recently, and reached a consensus on convening a high-level meeting of the Security Council as soon as possible. We look forward to a unanimous and clear voice from the Security Council. Wang Yi said that Security Council Resolution 2712 is the first step in promoting a ceasefire and a good beginning for resolving the Palestinian Israeli conflict through political means. The key now is whether the temporary ceasefire agreement can be continued and whether Gaza will reignite the war. The Chinese side's position is very clear: firstly, we must not let the flames of war reignite, and a comprehensive ceasefire should be achieved to avoid greater humanitarian disasters. The detained personnel should also be released. Secondly, humanitarian supplies should enter Gaza without obstruction, opening up more transit points, and establishing effective monitoring mechanisms. The third is to restart the "two-state solution" as soon as possible, which is the greatest common denominator of the international community and the fundamental way to solve the Palestinian Israeli issue. China calls for the convening of a more authoritative, wide-ranging, and effective international peace conference as soon as possible, and the formulation of a roadmap and timetable for the resumption of the "two country plan". China supports the United Nations to play a leading role in this regard. Guterres appreciates the constructive role played by China during its presidency of the Security Council to promote a political solution to the Palestinian Israeli issue and alleviate the humanitarian situation. He also expresses gratitude to China for hosting the high-level meeting on the Palestinian Israeli issue, stating that this is the first meeting to implement Security Council Resolution 2712, which is very important. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is worrying, and the unprecedented casualties among civilians, especially children, are completely unacceptable. Merely implementing a temporary ceasefire is not enough, and the humanitarian aid provided to Gaza is clearly insufficient. More border crossings should be opened as soon as possible, procedures simplified, and humanitarian supplies should enter Gaza quickly and smoothly. The United Nations firmly advocates the implementation of the "two-state solution" to fundamentally solve the Palestinian issue. We look forward to the Security Council forming more consensus on this matter. Wang Yi, on behalf of the Chinese government, expressed condolences to United Nations agencies for the victims of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. On the same day, Wang Yi also met with Brazilian Foreign Minister Vieira and Malaysian Foreign Minister Zambiri. (Lai Xin She)
