Mozi Survey Telescope Discovers Two Near Earth Asteroids

2023-11-27

Recently, the International Asteroid Center issued a statement confirming the discovery of two new near Earth asteroids by the Mozi Survey Telescope -2023 WX1 and 2023 WB2, which are the first batch of near Earth asteroids discovered by the Mozi Survey Telescope. Both 2023 WX1 and 2023 WB2 were first observed on November 18, 2023, with visual brightness values of 20.8 and 21.0, and visual motion speeds of 0.513 degrees per day and 1.006 degrees per day, respectively. After accumulating observation data from multiple observation stations, scientists have determined the initial orbits of 2023 WX1 and 2023 WB2, which are Apollo and Amor type near Earth asteroids, respectively. The minimum orbital intersection distance between 2023 WX1 and Earth is 0.0416 astronomical units, with an estimated diameter of about 170 meters. It is a potential threat asteroid (PHA). Mozi Sky Survey Telescope is a "double first-class" discipline platform construction project of University of Science and Technology of China. It is a large field optical imaging telescope jointly developed by University of Science and Technology of China and Zijinshan Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The first light image has been released on September 17, 2023. It is the first large-scale equipment to be put into operation and carry out astronomical observation and research in Cold Lake Astronomical Observation Base. The survey of celestial bodies in the solar system is one of the main scientific objectives of the Mozi Survey Telescope. After its first light, the Mozi Survey Telescope conducted a test survey of small celestial bodies in the solar system. As the most powerful optical time-domain survey equipment in the world, the Mozi Survey Telescope has begun to demonstrate its powerful survey capabilities. At present, the Mozi Survey Telescope solar system celestial body research team led by Zhao Haibin, director of the Planetary Science and Deep Space Exploration Research Department of the Zijinshan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and doctoral supervisor of the School of Astronomy and Space Science of the University of Science and Technology of China, has discovered a number of new major asteroids, and has realized the rediscovery of many near Earth asteroids.
