Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, November 23 (Reporter Zhang Mengran) - BMC Medicine published a paper on the 23rd, stating that regardless of whether they have heart metabolic disorders or not, people with a higher body mass index (BMI) have a 10% higher risk of developing cancer. The research results are based on sample data from over 500000 European adults. Relevant research shows that BMI above 25 is a definite risk factor for at least 13 cancers, including postmenopausal women's breast cancer cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer and ovarian cancer. However, it is not clear whether high BMI itself is associated with an increased risk, or whether other obesity related diseases (such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes) are also playing a role. Scientists from the International Agency for Cancer Research of the World Health Organization conducted the study using data from a total of 577343 adults, including 344094 participants from the UK biological sample bank and 233249 participants from the European prospective survey on cancer and nutrition. The median follow-up time after recruitment for both cohorts was 10.9 years. 32549 participants (9.5%) from the UK Biological Sample Bank had primary cancer, and 19833 participants (8.3%) from the European Cancer and Nutrition Prospective Survey had primary cancer. 76881 participants (22%) in the UK Biological Sample Bank were obese, while 36361 participants (15%) in the European Cancer and Nutrition Prospective Survey were obese. Overall, for individuals who do not suffer from cardiovascular metabolic diseases, a 5 point increase in BMI and an 11% increase in the risk of obesity related cancer. For people with type 2 diabetes, the risk of cancer increases by 11% for every 5 points increase in BMI, while for people with cardiovascular disease, the risk of cancer increases by 17% under the same circumstances. The results indicate that a higher BMI is associated with a higher risk of cancer, regardless of whether other cardiac metabolic diseases are present or not. However, in cases of cardiovascular disease, an increase in BMI leads to a particularly significant increase in cancer risk, highlighting the greater need for these populations to prevent obesity and reduce cancer risk.
