Chen Maobo: Hong Kong will invest approximately $30 billion in green transformation in the next 15 to 20 years

2023-11-23

On the 22nd, the Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Chen Maobo, stated at the Asia Pacific Business Forum 2023 that the government will formulate the "Hong Kong Hydrogen Energy Development Strategy" early next year and will invest approximately $30 billion over the next 15 to 20 years to implement various measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The Asia Pacific Business Forum 2023, which opened in Hong Kong on the same day, will feature the theme of "Asia Pacific Green Economy Platform: Promoting Green Transformation". Representatives from the political, business, and academic communities in the Asia Pacific region will discuss topics such as sustainable finance, green trading digital platforms, green construction, and carbon neutrality within two days. Chen Maobo pointed out in his speech that achieving green transformation requires a large amount of investment and relies on the joint allocation of resources by the government and the private sector. I believe that government investment will encourage the market to further understand the significance of green transformation, thereby driving private sector investment. It is reported that the current SAR government is committed to collaborating with the business community to achieve Hong Kong's green transformation and contribute to the regional carbon reduction process. The "Core Climate" platform launched by the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in October last year is currently the only international trading platform that provides voluntary carbon credits settled in both Hong Kong dollars and Chinese yuan. Last year, the total amount of green and sustainable debt issued in Hong Kong exceeded $80 billion, an increase of over 40% year-on-year. Chen Maobo stated that the SAR government will focus on achieving net zero power generation, reducing building energy consumption, promoting green transportation, and reducing waste to further reduce carbon emissions. He is confident that Hong Kong can further become an international green finance center in the future. Ali Shahbana, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), stated in a statement at the forum that the business community has a responsibility to take proactive and practical actions to fulfill carbon reduction commitments, and it is even more necessary to increase efforts to drive more enterprises to achieve sustainable development. It is reported that the forum is hosted by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the Sustainable Enterprise Network of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and is supported by the Environment and Ecology Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government, providing effective dialogue and exchange between the public and private sectors in the Asia Pacific region.
