Bringing More Women to the Top of the Science Pyramid

2023-11-03

On November 2nd, a symposium was held in Beijing for high-level female scientific and technological talent training courses jointly organized by the All China Women's Federation, the Organization Department of the Central Committee, and the Central Party School (National School of Administration). Eight female scientific and technological workers from different fields discussed their innovative experiences and provided suggestions for the development of female scientific and technological workers, encouraging more women to move towards the top of the scientific pyramid. At the forefront of scientific and technological innovation, Chinese female scientific and technological workers dare to gnaw at the "hard bone" and bravely overcome the "bottleneck" problem. Zhou Ying, Dean of the School of Civil Engineering at Tongji University, led the research and development of the first self resetting wall high-rise building. She believes that high-level female technology talents are "independent without losing their beauty, introverted and resilient", fully demonstrating self-esteem, confidence, self-reliance, and self-improvement. Wang Ting, Secretary of the Party General Branch and Vice President of the Affiliated Ophthalmology Hospital of Shandong First Medical University, participated in the research and development of China's first collar type artificial cornea product, breaking through foreign technological barriers. She said, "Women have unique advantages in scientific research, such as meticulous observation, focus, affinity, and resilience." However, overall, high-level female scientific and technological talents are relatively scarce, and the development of female scientific and technological talents still faces some bottlenecks. A survey on the participation of women in technological innovation in the Asia Pacific region shows that in the process of workplace development, reproductive costs, and family responsibility, female technology workers are constantly losing, showing a "leakage pipeline effect". To this end, multiple speakers proposed to improve special policies that conform to the characteristics of female scientific and technological talents, and fully unleash their innovative vitality. The first is to enhance the influence and discourse power of female technology talents. Wang Ting suggests increasing the proportion of women in the project application and evaluation expert pool. Huang Taocui, Deputy Director of the Rice Research Institute of the Chongqing Academy of Agricultural Sciences, suggests increasing the proportion of women in senior technical talents through measures such as setting a minimum proportion. Zhou Ying also proposed to form a common value that conforms to the collective characteristics of female technology talents in the new era, and to promote it to the whole society to encourage more girls to engage in STEM scientific research. Secondly, strengthening protection to address the concerns of female technology talents. Ma Lijia, a distinguished researcher at West Lake University, hopes to establish a social support system for infant and child care that matches the multiple child system and maternity leave system. Wang Juhong, Vice President of Tencent Computer Systems Co., Ltd., suggested introducing relevant policies to ensure that women and men have equal job opportunities and support women's return to their original positions after childbirth. In addition, it is necessary to support the growth of female technology talents in certain special fields. Wei Cui, a researcher at the 13th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, suggests introducing policies to support female technology workers in the military and national defense fields. But female science and technology workers cannot be bound by preferential policies, because high-level scientific research competition does not distinguish gender, age, or nationality, but relies on wisdom, will, and effort. "said Wu Dan, a professor at the School of Information Management and Dean of the Undergraduate School of Wuhan University. (New News Agency)
