China's first multi baseline interferometric synthetic aperture radar global surveying system successfully applied in orbit

2023-10-18

Reporters learned from the Aerospace Information Innovation Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the "Academy") on the 17th that the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system carried by China's "Hongtu I" commercial remote sensing satellite and developed by the Academy was the first high-accuracy topographic mapping data product of spaceborne single flight multi baseline interferometric SAR in the world. This marks the successful in orbit application of China's first multi baseline interferometric SAR global surveying system. On March 30th of this year, the "Hongtu 1" commercial remote sensing satellite was successfully launched, and its SAR system consists of four satellites, one main and three auxiliary, forming a vehicle wheel interference formation. The Aerospace Research Institute has fully undertaken the design, development, and engineering development of SAR payload systems, breaking through multiple key core technologies such as multi satellite formation baseline design and optimization, multi satellite system collaboration, spatial multi baseline joint elevation measurement, and multi base 3D imaging. The system has a maximum resolution of better than 0.5 meters and has a 1:50000 scale surveying capability. According to the chief engineer of the spaceborne SAR team, multi baseline interferometric SAR is based on the formation of multiple satellites, utilizing the positional diversity information between multiple satellites to work together to improve the accuracy and efficiency of elevation surveying. The system can obtain 4 sets of observation data and 6 effective surveying baselines in one flyover. Through joint processing of spatial multi baseline interference data, it effectively solves the problem of high-precision elevation reconstruction in various complex terrain areas such as steep slopes and cliffs, greatly improving the accuracy and efficiency of elevation measurement. Compared to the traditional double star formation interferometric measurement system, this system has achieved global high-precision digital elevation model (DEM) data acquisition, which can be extended from 3-4 years to about 1 year. At the same time, the system will establish a global high-precision digital elevation database with a grid of up to 10 meters, providing high-precision geographic information services for national economic construction and development. It is reported that the successful launch and in orbit application of the "one main and three auxiliary" multi baseline formation satellite have laid a solid foundation for the technological development of high-precision and efficient interferometric SAR satellites in China. The application prospects of light, small, and low-cost SAR satellites are broad, and they have great advantages in urban geological disaster monitoring, ocean monitoring, flood disaster monitoring, and surface subsidence monitoring, which can greatly meet the market demand for commercial applications of SAR satellites.
