Chinese Scientists Using New Technologies to Improve the Productivity of Saline Alkali Land

2023-10-17

At present, it is the harvest time in Heilongjiang, a major grain producing province in China. Not only is a bountiful harvest in the fertile black soil in sight, but agricultural scientists are using a new technology to improve the productivity of saline alkali land and have also found the "harvest code" in saline alkali land. In Gannan County, Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, a production testing team composed of agricultural research institutions and university experts entered the salt tolerant/halophilic microbial inoculum rice experimental field in Changhong Village, Changshan Township. There was a significant difference in rice growth between the adjacent two plots - one with sparse rice and white soil. The other piece of rice plant is dense, and each tree bends its waist. This land has a high salt content, and some plots have severe salt return. The ground is covered in white flowers, and the yield of rice per mu has not exceeded a thousand pounds. "54 year old Wu Changzhan's ancestors have been guarding this saline alkali land, planting the old style of fields for more than 30 years, hoping that new technologies will bring new life to this saline alkali land. After repeated calculations and comparisons by the expert group, the yield of rice per mu without bacterial agents was 485.96 kilograms, while the yield of rice per mu with bacterial agents was 510.03 kilograms, an increase of 4.95%. "Zheng Guiping, a professor of agriculture at Heilongjiang Bayi Agricultural Reclamation University and the leader of the production measurement expert group, stated that the average yield of rice per mu in Heilongjiang in 2022 was 503 kilograms. The expert group unanimously agreed that in the case of applying a halophilic/tolerant microbial agent once after the mild saline alkali land turns green, Rice has good growth and significant yield increase effect, which is worthy of large-scale demonstration and promotion. Zheng Guiping told reporters that the yield test results showed that not only did rice increase production significantly, but also corn and soybean increased production by 6.60% and 7.92%, respectively, with significant economic benefits. The halophilic/salt tolerant microbial agents mentioned by Zheng Guiping are the "harvest code" in saline alkali soil. The black soil in Northeast China is precious due to its rarity, and is known as the "giant panda in arable land". Although the grain production in Northeast China is increasing steadily, due to various factors such as long-term excessive cultivation and utilization, climate change, and intensified soil erosion, the black soil is thinning, hardening, and thinning. According to statistics, the total area of saline alkali land in Heilongjiang Province exceeds 10 million acres. The governance and utilization of this type of "special cultivated land" has always been a challenging issue for various regions. In order to fully tap into the potential for grain production in saline alkali land, Gannan County actively explores new ways of comprehensive development and utilization of saline alkali land, relying on the foundation jointly built with Northeast Agricultural University. In 2023, Professor Jiang Juquan from Northeast Agricultural University collaborated with Professor Ding Yanqin/Professor Du Binghai from Shandong Agricultural University to develop a special green biological agent for saline alkali land - halophilic/tolerant microbial agent. The experiment was conducted on crops such as rice, corn, and soybeans on 45 acres of saline alkali land through spraying operations. This technology has been well applied in planting winter wheat, corn, and soybeans in saline alkali areas of Shandong, cotton in saline alkali areas of Xinjiang, and chili peppers in saline alkali areas of Jiangsu, significantly improving the productivity of saline alkali areas. It's like using biological agents to create a protective film on the roots of crops, allowing them to adapt to any degree of salinity and alkalinity in the land. "Project leader and Professor Jiang Juquan from the School of Life Sciences at Northeast Agricultural University said that the comprehensive utilization of saline alkali land is related to national food security, awakening the" dormant "resource of saline alkali land, and fully tapping the potential of saline alkali land development and utilization, which is not the responsibility of scientific researchers
