Built in 214 BC, the Lingqu Canal, with a total length of 37 kilometers, connects the two rivers of Hunan and Li, the Yangtze River and the the Pearl River. It is one of the oldest existing artificial canals in the world, an important channel for water transportation between the north and the south of China, and a major source of water for surrounding agricultural production. To this day, it still plays a role in farmland irrigation, flood discharge, ecological water replenishment, and is known as the "pearl of ancient water conservancy architecture in the world".
