Three Scientists Share the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics

2023-10-04

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on the 3rd that the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics will be awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Klaus, and Anne L ü llier in recognition of their experimental method of generating attosecond light pulses for studying the electron dynamics of matter. Hans Ellegren, Permanent Secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, announced the list of winners and their main achievements at the Royal Academy's conference hall on the same day. He said that this year's award-winning achievement is the experimental method, which provides new tools for humans to explore the electronic world within atoms and molecules. Agostini is a professor at Ohio State University in the United States; Klaus is the director of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Germany and a professor at the University of Munich in Germany; L ü llier is a professor at Lund University in Sweden. In a press release released on the same day, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences stated that the award-winning research results "demonstrate a method for generating extremely short light pulses, which can be used to measure the rapid process of electron movement or energy change". The communique states that exploring truly brief events requires special technology, and in the electronic world, changes occur in tens of microseconds. The experiments of the winners generated such short light pulses measured in attoseconds, which can be used to provide images of the internal processes of atoms and molecules. The communique stated that the award-winning research results have made it possible to study rapid processes that were previously untraceable, and have potential applications in many different fields, such as understanding and controlling the behavior of electrons in materials in electronics, and can also be used in medical diagnosis to identify different molecules. The communique quoted Eva Olsson, the chairman of the Nobel Prize in Physics selection committee, as saying that we can now open the door to the electronic world, and attosecond physics provides us with the opportunity to understand the mechanisms controlled by electrons. The next step in research will be how to utilize them. During a telephone interview on the same day, Lv Liye stated that winning the Nobel Prize was "of great significance" to her, and she felt very happy as the award-winning female scientist. The three winners will receive an equal share of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1 million) in the prize money. (New News Agency)
