The following is the full text of the speech by Professor Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of Hong Kong, at the 2023 Future Science Awards press conference on August 16: Professor Lu (Co Chairman of the 2023 Future Science Awards Week Program Committee and Professor Lu Yuming, President of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences), Professor Ren (Member of the 2023 Future Science Awards Week Program Committee and Professor Ren Yonghua, Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences), and guests from Beijing and Hong Kong: Good morning everyone! I am very pleased to attend today's 2023 Future Science Awards press conference. Firstly, on behalf of the SAR government, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the outstanding scientists who have just announced their awards! The Future Science Award is known as the "Nobel Prize of China", which proves its authoritative position. Over the past seven years, the Future Science Awards have selected over 20 outstanding scientists from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and four regions, praising their outstanding achievements in life sciences, material sciences, and mathematics and computer science. Last October, the Future Science Awards and the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences jointly hosted the "Hong Kong Forum: Building the Future through Science". I was also invited to participate and had a friendly exchange with the attending scholars and experts. I am pleased that this year's Future Science Awards press conference will be held simultaneously in Beijing and Hong Kong, and the award ceremony and awards week event to be held in October will be moved to Hong Kong for the first time. At that time, nearly a hundred famous scientists from multiple countries around the world will gather together to bring the highest level of scientific research information and highly forward-looking perspectives, promote international exchange of scientific research talents, and deepen the international community's recognition of China's scientific development achievements. In recent years, the ecological development of innovation in Hong Kong has become increasingly prosperous, and the achievements of innovation have also been highly recognized internationally. In the past year, Hong Kong's research and development achievements have won multiple international innovation awards. Several scientists in Hong Kong have won world-class scientific awards, including Professor Lu Yuming and Professor Ren Yonghua present today, who are pioneers in the international scientific field. All of this reflects that Hong Kong has the soil to cultivate excellent scientific talents and also has solid scientific and technological innovation capabilities. The Hong Kong SAR government will double its efforts and fully promote the construction of Hong Kong as an international innovation and technology center. We will leverage the hub role and international advantages of Hong Kong's connectivity both domestically and internationally, and continue to strongly support the hosting of world-class academic exchange events in Hong Kong. At the same time, the Monday series of scientific activities at the Grand Prix will further enhance the understanding and interest of the younger generation, including Hong Kong, in science, promote the spirit of scientists, and create a stronger scientific atmosphere for society. Finally, I take this opportunity to sincerely thank all scientists for their continuous efforts and contributions. I look forward to continuing to walk shoulder to shoulder with all my colleagues on the path of creating science and technology, and creating a better future for humanity. The upcoming awards ceremony and awards week event in October will be a major event for Hong Kong and even the international scientific community. I am looking forward to it very much, and I sincerely invite all winners and scientists at home and abroad to experience Hong Kong's unique charm and vibrant innovation ecosystem together.
