Chinese scientists achieve precise total synthesis from carbon dioxide to sugar

2023-08-17

The latest research results published by the renowned academic journal "Science Bulletin" on the 15th show that Chinese scientists have achieved precise total synthesis from carbon dioxide to sugar in the laboratory, taking a crucial step forward in the artificial synthesis of sugar. A sample of synthetic hexose solution was taken in the laboratory of Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (taken on August 13). Sun Fanyue, a journalist from Xinhua News Agency, takes sugar as the main source of energy needed by the human body. Artificial sugar synthesis has been a direction pursued by the scientific community in recent years. Prior to this, multiple scientists around the world have made varying degrees of contributions. This research achievement was completed by the scientific research team of Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics over two years. The first author of the paper, Yang Jiangang, introduced that the team mixed high concentration carbon dioxide and other raw materials in a certain proportion in the reaction solution, and under the action of chemical and enzyme catalysts, obtained four types of hexoses: glucose, aloketose, tagatose, and mannose. Hexose is a general term for sugars that are widely distributed in nature and are most closely related to the nutritional metabolism of the body. In the laboratory of Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the scientific research team is doing the experiment of synthetic hexose (photographed on August 13). Xinhua News Agency reporter Sun Fanyue took about 17 hours to complete the reaction time of the experiment. Compared with the traditional method of extracting sugar through planting sugarcane and other crops, the duration of sugar acquisition has achieved a leap from "year" to "hour". The efficiency of sugar synthesis this time is 0.67 grams per liter per hour, which is more than 10 times higher than known results. The carbon fixation synthesis efficiency of glucose reaches 59.8 nanomolar carbon per milligram of catalyst per minute, which is currently the highest known level of artificial sugar production both domestically and internationally. In the laboratory of Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, associate researcher Yang Jiangang is doing the experiment of synthetic hexose (photographed on August 13). Xinhua News Agency reporter Jin Liwang also achieved precise control of artificially synthesized sugars through research. By controlling the different catalytic effects of different enzymes, almost any type of sugar can theoretically be synthesized, "said Yang Jiangang. In the laboratory of Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, associate researcher Yang Jiangang (front middle), Dr. Song Wan (front left) and other team members took a group photo (taken on August 13). Xinhua News Agency reporter Jin Liwang commented on the paper by German Academy of Sciences academician Manfred Reitz, stating that converting carbon dioxide to sugar is a particularly challenging task. This achievement provides a flexible, multifunctional, and efficient sugar synthesis route, opening a door for green chemistry. (Mao Zhenhua, Wang Jinghuai)
