The depth of water in some paddy fields is more than 3 meters. Geometry of the impact of rainstorm in Northeast China on food crops

In recent days, the Northeast region has been affected by sustained heavy rainfall, and some rice fields in northern and western Jilin, southern Heilongjiang, and northwestern Liaoning have been severely affected by floods. Among them, in Wuchang City, Heilongjiang Province, Shulan City, Jilin Province, and other places, some rice fields located in low-lying areas or along river plots have been submerged by water, with some rice fields reaching a depth of over 3 meters. Zhao Xiulan, a senior engineer at the Central Meteorological Observatory, said that since August, two consecutive typhoons affecting Northeast China have disrupted the normal growth rhythm of rice. Currently, most rice is in the stage of heading and flowering, and they are most afraid of being flooded. If the water level in the rice field is too high, exceeding the waterlogging tolerance of the rice, it is very easy to cause anther cracking, wet stigma, and other situations, leading to poor or inability to pollinate the rice, easily forming empty shells, and increasing the rate of empty grains. At the same time, rainy weather is accompanied by less sunlight, which also has adverse effects on rice flowering and pollination. So, severe waterlogging can cause a decrease in rice production. The threat of rainstorm to other food crops should not be underestimated. Qu Huihui, a senior engineer at the Heilongjiang Provincial Institute of Meteorological Sciences, said that the heavy rainfall caused waterlogging in some low-lying areas of Heilongjiang, with the largest corn planting area in the waterlogged area. Recently, some parts of northern Heilongjiang Province are currently in the silking stage of corn, while most parts of Heilongjiang Province are entering the milking and ripening stage of corn. Long periods of waterlogging and soaking can hinder the absorption of nutrients by the roots of corn plants, inhibit physiological activities, and slow down the speed of silking and grain filling. The situation of soybeans is similar to that of corn. Soybeans that are currently in the stage of podding to bulging will experience slow podding and weak growth after suffering from waterlogging disasters, "said Qu Huihui. The scope of wind and rain caused by Typhoon" Kanu "highly overlaps with some areas affected by waterlogging in previous farmland, which will exacerbate the waterlogging disaster in farmland. Drought crops such as corn and soybeans are prone to hypoxia due to poor root ventilation, and a few low-lying crops may be severely flooded, leading to premature plant senescence or death. In stormy weather, food crops are also prone to lodging. Qu Huihui told reporters that the soil moisture in waterlogged farmland is saturated and the soil is soft. If accompanied by strong winds, the probability of crop lodging will increase. After lodging, the field environment is shaded, and the nutrient transport and late filling speed of crops will slow down, thereby affecting crop growth. The shorter the waterlogging time, the greater the hope of survival and rescue of food crops. Yang Wei, a researcher at the Heilongjiang Provincial Agricultural Technology Promotion Station, stated that areas with severe waterlogging damage should increase drainage efforts, and drainage should be carried out in stages as soon as possible. Seedlings should be inspected, washed, supported, and fertilized in a timely manner. (New News Agency)
