Twenty Years of Quantum Computing in China

2023-08-11

The reporter recently learned from the Anhui Quantum Computing Engineering Research Center that the second CCF Quantum Computing Conference and China Quantum Computing Industry Summit, hosted by the Chinese Computer Society (CCF), will be held in Hefei, Anhui from August 19th to 20th. The conference will focus on showcasing the latest achievements in quantum computing, sharing development experiences, and providing an exchange platform for interdisciplinary integration and multi technology integration innovation in the field of quantum computing, outlining the new face of quantum computing in China from different perspectives. Marked by the establishment of China's first quantum computing research group in 2003, China's quantum computing has gone through 20 years of development. Starting from a rudimentary studio with only one table and one chair, in 20 years, China's quantum computing has achieved from backwardness to catching up, and then to international advanced level. After the reform and opening up, Guo Guangcan, an academician of the CAS Member who was the first to start quantum information research in China, still remembers that when he went to the University of Toronto in Canada to study in 1980, he found that overseas research on quantum optics began as early as 20 years ago, while at that time the relevant research in China was almost blank. Faced with a huge gap, Guo Guangcan made an appointment with a group of Chinese international students: "Whoever returns to China first will organize a team and take on the responsibility of Chinese quantum optics!" In 1984, Guo Guangcan, after returning to China, presided over the first national academic conference on quantum optics. Afterwards, he opened the first quantum optics course in China, established the first quantum information laboratory, and obtained China's first "973" quantum information technology project in 2001. He formed a team consisting of more than 50 scholars from more than ten scientific research units across the country. Today, five project leaders in this team, Guo Guangcan, Peng Kunxi, Sun Changpu, Pan Jianwei, and Du Jiangfeng, have been successively named academicians of the CAS Member. More than a dozen young academic backbones continue to play an important role in quantum information research. In order to give the Chinese people their own "quantum computing power", in 2003, China's first quantum computing research group was officially established in an idle classroom numbered "8013" at the University of Science and Technology of China. Sometimes we can only stand and study. "Recalling the scene back then, the members of the research team still remember it vividly. Standing up for research, in order to make Chinese quantum computing "stand up". The rudimentary idle classroom of quantum chips, quantum computing measurement and control integrated machines, quantum operating systems, quantum software, and quantum computing cloud platforms has laid a solid foundation for major breakthroughs from scratch in recent years. However, the new question of how to advance quantum computing from laboratory to engineering and industrialization has once again been put before researchers. In 2017, when no enterprise was willing to cooperate in the development of quantum computers, Academician Guo Guangcan and Professor Guo Guoping led the doctoral team of the Key Laboratory of Quantum Information of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to jointly establish China's first quantum computing company. As time goes by, the company now holds 234 patents on the global quantum computing technology invention patent ranking released by authoritative institutions, ranking first domestically and sixth internationally in the quantum computing industry. Industrial development cannot do without policy support. In August 2016, the State Council issued the《
