As a millennium historic site, the Mogao Caves have experienced many years, but with the help of modern science and technology, they are still full of vitality. How can technology prolong the lifespan of millennium old historical sites? Recently, the reporter accompanied the "Rooted in Grassroots" research team of young cadres from the Ministry of Science and Technology to conduct research in Dunhuang, Gansu, to gain an on-site understanding of the supporting role of modern technology in the protection of Dunhuang cultural relics and the cultural industry. At the foot of Sanwei Mountain on the new road of Digital Grottoes, by the bank of Mingsha Mountain, in the Dangquan River Valley. The Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, with 735 caves, is the largest and most complete treasure house of Buddhist art in the world. The excavation of grottoes lasted for about 1000 years from the Sixteen Kingdoms period to the Yuan Dynasty, and is unique among Chinese grottoes. In 1987, it was included in the first batch of World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO. At the digital acquisition site of Cave 341 in Mogao Caves, a set of "detachable acquisition equipment" is in operation. On the slide, the dark camera lens automatically scatters and splits the frame under bright light to capture local murals; Next to the computer, young staff pieced together delicate photos one by one to form a whole. "Cultural relics have Irreversible process. Digitization will permanently record all the information of cultural relics at the moment, so we have made a lot of standards for digital collection. More than 2000 pictures will be taken to splice the wall being collected, and the data volume of one picture will reach 50G to 60G." Yu Tianxiu, director of the Institute of Cultural Relics Digitization of Dunhuang Research Academy, told reporters. Yu Tianxiu introduced that the Dunhuang Research Academy, in cooperation with scientific research institutions at home and abroad, has developed a set of key digital technologies suitable for immovable cultural relics after three decades of exploration and research, including two-dimensional digital technology for murals based on photography and computer technology, Iterative reconstruction technology for colored sculptures based on laser scanning and Structured light, and digital technology for large sites based on remote sensing mapping and oblique photography, We have implemented the "Digital Dunhuang" project. The digital collection of vast and detailed relics is the foundation of "Digital Dunhuang". By the end of 2022, the Dunhuang Grottoes have completed the digital collection of murals in 289 caves, the image mosaic processing of 178 caves, the production of panoramic roaming programs in 162 caves, the Iterative reconstruction of seven major sites, the Iterative reconstruction of 45 painted sculptures, and the digital scanning of 50000 historical file negatives, forming a huge number of digital achievements. An open and shared online platform that allows global users to enjoy Dunhuang culture together. Since the launch of the "Digital Dunhuang" resource library in 2016, 30 high-definition images and panoramic roaming programs of the entire cave have been shared globally, with users visiting 78 countries and regions around the world. In December 2022, the "Digital Dunhuang · Open Material Library" jointly created by Dunhuang Research Academy and Tencent will go online; In April this year, the "Digital Sutra Cave", which combines the research results of Dunhuang Studies and game technology, was launched. The beauty of Dunhuang can be traced back to ancient and modern times. With just one mobile phone, one can travel to Dunhuang for thousands of years and have a wide range of visual experience. During on-site visits, tourists often encounter various regrets such as limited opening of caves, limited visiting time, and limited visibility into details.
