After 15 days of sea voyage, the 13th Chinese Arctic Ocean Scientific Expedition arrived at the first operation site in the Chukchi Sea on the afternoon of 26th Beijing time, officially starting the oceanic scientific research. The first station assignment lasted for about 5 hours and 30 minutes, and ended around 22:30 on the same day, covering most of the routine assignments for this Arctic Ocean scientific expedition. According to the scheduled homework plan, the first station of ocean scientific research will be conducted on the midship deck, stern deck, and 9th deck. The midship deck operation includes CTD (temperature, salinity, and depth multi-parameter ocean observation system), water harvesting operation, vertical trawl sampling of plankton, and ocean optical observation. On the stern deck, the observation of particle profile, box sediment sampling, Microplastics trawl sampling, Benthos trawl operation, and the deployment of submersible buoys and wave buoys were carried out successively. The 9th deck operation project involves the deployment of meteorological sounding balloons. Chen Chao, the captain of the Oceanic Expedition Team, introduced that the Oceanic Expedition Team under this expedition consists of 45 scientific researchers from relevant units and universities, who are the main participants in the implementation of oceanic scientific research assignments. According to the job content, researchers are divided into eight groups: hydrological environment, water chemistry, atmospheric environment, midship organisms, stern organisms, pollution and sedimentation, geology and geophysics, and sea ice environment. The leader of the expedition team, Wang Jinhui, stated that the Arctic Ocean exploration project lasted for more than 40 days, which was relatively tight and had an increased workload compared to the previous two projects. In particular, he took on more work in ice and snow observation, buoy and submersible buoy operations, and so on. Compared with the previous Arctic Ocean scientific research, this route in the Arctic Circle has more floating ice and larger sea fog, which objectively increases the difficulty of related operations. Wang Jinhui stated that the inspection team will offset the adverse effects caused by complex ice conditions and harsh weather by strengthening task coordination and conducting synchronous operations. In the subsequent assignments, the inspection team will continue to focus on disciplines such as hydrology, atmosphere, and biology, accelerate the progress of the assignments, and strive to successfully complete various scientific research tasks.
