Zhou Liang, 51, is the director of the Yibin Institute of Rare Aquatic animal (hereinafter referred to as "Yibin Institute"). Since 1993, Zhou Liang and his father have been studying the artificial breeding of rare fish. Since the successful artificial reproduction of the parent fish of the Yangtze River sturgeon cultivated in Yibin in 1998, full artificial reproduction and the production of offspring and seedlings of the Yangtze River sturgeon have been gradually achieved. The Yangtze River sturgeon, also known as the Dabry's sturgeon, is a national first-class protected animal and a unique rare Aquatic animal in the Yangtze River, known as the "giant panda in water". In July 2022, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources announced the extinction of the Yangtze River sturgeon in the wild, as it had not been found to breed and lay eggs in the wild for 20 years. In March this year, the Yangtze River Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, the Fisheries Research Institute of the Agricultural science of Sichuan Province, and the Yibin Rare Aquatic animal Research Institute cooperated to conduct a field breeding test of Yangtze sturgeon in an inner river channel in the Jiang'an section of the Yibin River of the Yangtze River, simulate its natural spawning environment, and release 10 female and 10 male parent fishes of Sexual maturity Yangtze sturgeon, and finally 8 female fishes spawned more than 500000 eggs. Zhou Liang stated that, "Since 2007, we have been breeding and releasing young Yangtze sturgeon in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River every year. Up to now, nearly 500000 young Yangtze sturgeon have been released. Although this year's experiment is only a small breakthrough in technology, it is also of great significance to us. It shows that this road has not gone wrong, and we will work hard in this direction step by step, and one day we will succeed."
