New progress in research on "seawater uranium extraction" technology

On the 11th, the reporter learned from the Hefei Institute of Materials Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences that the research group of Chen Changlun, a researcher at the Institute of Plasma Research, has made new progress in the preparation of amidoxime composite materials using plasma technology for uranium extraction from seawater. The relevant achievements were recently accepted and published by the internationally renowned academic journal Applied Surface science. The total amount of uranium in seawater is about 4.5 billion tons, which is more than 1000 times the terrestrial uranium reserves. Polymer functional materials modified with amidoxime groups are considered to be ideal materials for uranium extraction from seawater. However, the challenge faced by uranium extraction materials from seawater is that the adsorption performance of amidoxime based adsorption materials is greatly affected by the environment, and the adsorption capacity measured in the laboratory is generally higher than that in real seawater; Functional groups are not fully utilized; Some grafting methods result in the loss of mechanical properties of the material; The adsorption selectivity of amidoxime based composite materials still needs to be further improved. The advantage of low-temperature plasma technology in activating materials is that the surface of activated materials will not damage the volume structure of materials, the monomer to be modified does not need protection, and it has the advantages of high efficiency, convenience, cleanness and pollution-free. The energy of active particles in the plasma can open these Covalent bond and reassemble. The research team used oxygen plasma as a grafting method to prepare structures with multiple free radicals on the surface of cellulose and used them for subsequent grafting activation. During the plasma modification process, the modified substrate is exposed to a partially ionized gas atmosphere. By inserting or replacing previous functional groups or generating free radicals for surface grafting or subsequent crosslinking, new chemical functional groups are generated on the substrate, without affecting the internal structure of the substrate. Maintaining the inherent properties of the substrate avoids environmental pollution and radiation using conventional methods. The results indicate that the amidoxime cellulose material prepared by plasma technology can significantly enhance the enrichment of uranyl ions at low concentrations. Researchers suggest that this innovative method can provide new ideas for the preparation of modified seawater uranium extraction adsorbent materials. (New News Agency)
