The rise of Chinese young people walking through streets and alleys in Citywalk has given rise to a new trend in cultural and tourism consumption

During the weekend, Li Linghua, who has been working in Changsha for eight years, signed up for a Citywalk ("City Walk") activity organized by a community organization in Changsha with 108 yuan (RMB, the same below). Avoiding the crowded internet celebrity check-in points, this 30-year-old Henan guy and participants delved into the Changsha market, ancient streets, and alleys to savor the cultural heritage of the ancient city of Changsha, which has a history of over 2000 years. The main customer base of Citywalk is foreign tourists who are looking forward to new travel methods, local residents who are interested in the city's cultural history, and some niche urban traditional culture and street culture enthusiasts. This immersive, slow paced new lifestyle of cultural tourism is becoming a trend among young people in China. In September 2022, young people participated in Citywalk activities in Changsha, Hunan. (Image provided by the interviewee) They have plans to walk on a unique urban route, exploring urban changes, history and culture, fashion and innovation from a tourism perspective. Having been in a city for many years, except for a few frequently visited places, I don't know much about it. Walking can help me rediscover the cultural atmosphere of your city, "said Li Ling, 30. Citywalk can see something more central and distinctive about a city. In recent years, there have been more and more Citywalk organizations in major cities in China. Some organizations may invite scholars or enthusiasts involved in cultural and folk studies to become narrators and engage in in-depth communication with participants during their walks. The "Go Ye Travel" founded by Xiao Yiyi, a post-90s girl in Changsha, has developed six routes in China, involving six cities, namely Kashgar, Yining, Dali Old City, Xizhou Ancient Town, Lhasa and Changsha. Lanzhou and Quanzhou routes are under planning. "The route design should be like walking in the 'Open-air museum'." Xiao Yiyi gives examples, such as the two routes of Xiyuan Beili - Chaozong Street - Taiping Old Street and Tianxin Pavilion - Sujia Lane - Taiping Old Street in Changsha. Participants can visit the hotels and theaters of the Republic of China, Former Residence of Jia Yi, the famous History of China and cultural building Tianxin Pavilion, the anti Japanese war memorial buildings, taste Changsha shrimp, Changsha stinky tofu, and touch the ancient lanes of trendy literature and art. There is a professional team leader explaining the entire process, with no more than 12 members in a group, and an event lasting 4 hours or 1 day. "Xiao Yiyi said, Citywalk is not only a way for young people to communicate with a city, but also provides a new social scene. On June 15, 2022, the street view of Beizheng Street, one of the oldest commercial streets in Changsha. According to Yang Huafeng, a journalist from China News Agency, "The 'slow travel+deep' product that delves into cultural content is loved by tourists, who are willing to carefully interpret the story behind buildings while walking." Wu Yunrong, senior manager of the brand development department of Lv Mama Tourism Network, said that Citywalk allows tourists to have a deeper understanding of a city's history, geography, culture, customs, cuisine, and other aspects, which is a new consumption scene unlocking urban leisure. Xiao Xiao, the head of a Citywalk organization in Changsha, has launched over 20 Changsha specialty routes in his studio, including popular city food exploration routes and Changsha Old City Memory Cultural Route. Route design should help participants more efficiently explore the city's cultural geography, customs, and traditions
