Archaeological Discovery of the Shang Dynasty Cultural Relics with the Largest Area in the Pearl River Delta in Guangzhou

2023-06-28

According to a report from the Guangzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology on the 25th, from May 2022 to June 2023, the institute conducted three consecutive archaeological excavations at the Zhuyuanling Site in Huangpu District, Guangzhou, with an actual excavation area of 13500 square meters. After archaeological exploration and excavation, it has been confirmed that the distribution area of the Shang Dynasty relics at the Zhuyuanling site is about 80000 square meters, and the core area is about 15000 square meters. Zhuyuan Ridge is located in the east of Hetangxia Village, Longhu Street, Huangpu District, the core area of Sino Singapore Ciudad del Saber. It is composed of three small gentle hills in the shape of "pin", with the highest altitude of 53.8m. Archaeological excavations at the Zhuyuanling Site have discovered nearly 1500 ash pits of different shapes and sizes during the Shang Dynasty. Some ash pits with regular shapes and depths exceeding 1 meter should belong to storage cellars or sacrificial pits for sacrificial purposes; There are more than 1800 column holes of different sizes and depths, and a considerable part of them are related to Stilt house; There are also 25 gray ditches of varying lengths and depths, which are speculated to be related to the natural or artificial water supply and drainage in the production and life of the ancestors. The largest number of artifacts unearthed during the Shang Dynasty at the Zhuyuanling Site are various stone tools, including Ge, Zhang, Qi, Yue, etc., mainly consisting of remnants, semi-finished products, waste or surplus materials. Among them, there is one well preserved stone grinding groove, finely ground, which is rare in pre Qin archaeological discoveries in Guangdong; There are few jade artifacts, and only jade walls and jade rings can be seen in complete artifacts; One bronze axe with a hole was unearthed from the surface arable soil layer, which is the only pre Qin bronze artifact found at the Zhuyuanling site, but it is uncertain whether the era can be as early as the Shang Dynasty. In addition, the number of pottery pieces unearthed is not very large, mainly from ash pits and cultural layers, mainly consisting of muddy gray pottery and gray white pottery, sanded gray black pottery, and orange yellow pottery. According to experts from the Guangzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, based on the unearthed stone daggers, stone zhang shapes, and the decorative patterns and shape characteristics of pottery, the age of the Shang Dynasty remains at the Zhuyuanling site should be basically contemporaneous with the first phase of the Getian Mountain site in Luogang, Guangzhou, the Moyi Mountain site in Zengcheng, the second phase of the Fufuling site in Zengcheng, and the second phase of the Dongguan Village Head site, The era is roughly equivalent to the mid Shang Dynasty in the Central Plains region. Some finely polished and regular stone daggers, zhang, qi, yue, collar ring and jade jade should belong to ritual tools. Tracing back to the origin, we can clearly see the influence of the ritual jade culture of the Xia and Shang dynasties in the Central Plains, reflecting the process of the ritual system of the Xia and Shang dynasties in the Central Plains spreading southward to the the Pearl River Delta and promoting the early sinicization of Lingnan. Experts have pointed out that the remains of the Zhuyuanling Shang period are likely mainly used for the production and processing of stone tools and other production and living tools, with a large scale and a long duration, indicating that there should also be large settlements or cemeteries of the same period in the surrounding area. Zhuyuanling Site is the largest Shang Dynasty site confirmed by archaeological discoveries in the the Pearl River Delta at present, which fully shows that from the late Neolithic to the early Western Han Dynasty, the Jiufo Zhenlong Luogang area in Guangzhou was an important cultural corridor between the lower reaches of the Beijiang River and the lower reaches of the Dongjiang River, and played an important role in the early civilization development history of the the Pearl River Delta.
