Presenting a closer historical reality of ancient human life - "Hometown of the East - Millions of Years of Human History on the Land of China" exhibition

[New Exhibition Grand View] On June 22, when we entered the South Hall 3 of the National Museum of China, a dinosaur skeleton fossil as high as the roof became the focus of attention. This exhibition, entitled "Oriental Hometown -- One Million Years of Human History of China", is co sponsored by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Museum of China. Wang Yueqian, research librarian and curator of the National Museum of China, said that this is the first comprehensive and concentrated exhibition of ancient human studies in China. Who are we, the story of archaeological restoration of human origin and evolution? Where do we come from? This is the eternal curiosity of humanity and the topic that archaeologists persistently pursue. Millions of years ago, ancient humans traveled from Africa to various parts of the world and became the ancestors of our modern people. There are two small teeth in the showcase, which are not very impressive, but their owner is the famous Yuanmou Man. Living 1.7 million years ago, they are the earliest Homo erectus in China. I only took a few steps in the exhibition hall, but I traveled through hundreds of thousands of years of time and space. The Yunxian human skull, which is one million years ago, has both obvious Homo erectus characteristics and some ancient Homo sapiens characteristics, and is in a critical period of ancient human development and evolution. The skull fossil of "Yunxian Man 3" discovered in 2022 is one of the most complete Homo erectus skulls found in Eurasia inland at the same time so far, and its discovery has been listed in the "Top Ten New Archaeological Discoveries in China" in 2022. From the Yuanmou Man about 1.7 million years ago, to the Lantian Homo erectus about 1.63 million years ago, and then to the Yunxian people about 1 million years ago... These archaeological discoveries have proved the human history of China for millions of years. China is one of the regions with the richest ancient human resources in the world. Since the discovery of the first skull fossil of Peking Man at the Zhoukoudian Peking Man Site in 1929, there have been more than 70 sites in China where prehistoric human fossils have been found. Archaeologists have seen the amazing secret of the origin of human beings millions of years ago from these ancient human fossils. The exhibition uses many vivid and interesting exhibits to restore the details of ancient human life: the Yiyuan people, who lived between 420000 and 320000 years ago, have traces of tooth picking on their teeth, which is the earliest human tooth picking behavior in East Asia with conclusive evidence; Maba Man, 300000 to 130000 years ago, had non fatal injuries on their heads caused by blunt external force impact, which may be caused by mutual attacks between ancient humans, which is the earliest known evidence of violence between ancient humans in East Asia; The toe bones of Tianyuan man are relatively thin. Some scholars speculate that this may be the evidence that the East Asian ancients first wore shoes. As early as tens of thousands of years ago, the love for beauty had already sprouted. In Zhoukoudian, Beijing, between 35000 and 38000 years ago, Shandingdong man had begun to make clothes with bone needles, pierced the thin bones on the grass carp orbit for decoration, and dyed some decorations with ochre pigment. 29000 to 20000 years ago, the ancestors of Lingwu Shuigou Cave in Ningxia trimmed ostrich egg slices into exquisite circular decorations. The deer tooth ornament unearthed from Gezi Mountain in Ningxia, 13000-12000 years ago, has black and red materials on its surface, which indicates that people at that time may use ochre and charcoal mixed with animal fat to make Adhesive
