Another Alzheimer's Disease Treatment Target Discovered

2023-06-14

All along, β- The accumulation of amyloid protein in the brain is believed to be the main cause of Alzheimer's disease. On June 13, the reporter of Science and Technology Daily learned that the latest research of Professor Wang Xin from the State Key Laboratory of Cell Stress Biology of Xiamen University and the Institute of Neuroscience of Xiamen University School of Medicine identified another important pathological factor for Alzheimer's disease—— β 2-microglobulin, and it was found that by clearing the β 2-microglobulin can alleviate neural damage in the brain of Alzheimer's disease mice, therefore they proposed β 2-Microglobulin may become a new therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease. The relevant research results have recently been published in the international academic journal Nature Neuroscience. The team has recently discovered a way to communicate with β- Immune factors that bind to amyloid proteins and exacerbate their toxicity β 2-Microglobulin Wang Xin introduced that they found that in addition to maintaining the body's immunity, β 2-microglobulin is also an important role in the occurrence and development of Alzheimer's disease. In the experiment, the team artificially reduced the amount of β 2-Microglobulin alleviated amyloid plaque deposition and cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease mouse models. Meanwhile, β 2-microglobulin is abundant in the blood, which can cross the Blood–brain barrier and enter the brain, nearly half of which are in the brain β 2-Microglobulin comes from peripheral blood. The team further studied and found that by reducing the levels of β 2-microglobulin can also significantly reduce the brain β 2-Microglobulin levels effectively improve cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease mice. For a long time, Alzheimer's disease related Drug development mainly focuses on β- Amyloid protein is developed as a target, and the default treatment drugs must enter the brain through the Blood–brain barrier to play a role, but this may aggravate nerve damage and cause many adverse reactions such as cerebral hemorrhage and brain edema. Headache may not necessarily cure the problem, "said Wang Xin, the study suggests, β 2-Microglobulin may become a new therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease, providing a new strategy for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
