Is pre opened coconut water safe

2023-06-07

Recently, the topic of "drinking pre opened coconut water to enter the emergency room" was hot on microblog. Recently, a reporter from China Consumer Daily randomly visited multiple fruit shops and supermarkets in Wuhan, Hubei Province and found that some merchants did not indicate the launch date and shelf life of pre opened coconuts. In multiple fruit shops near Liangdao Street in Wuchang District, Wuhan City, there are both fully packaged coconuts, self opened coconuts from merchants, and pre opened coconuts with straws. The reporter found that most of the pre opened coconuts in the store were not labeled with their launch date or shelf life. Several store staff replied that "all coconuts on sale are within their shelf life, and stale coconuts will be removed from the shelves in a timely manner. Ms. Chen, a consumer, told reporters that sometimes for the convenience of drinking, pre opened coconuts are purchased. Currently, there have been no adverse reactions such as vomiting, but in the future, coconuts with expiration dates will be chosen for purchase. Cai Honglin, Director of the Nutrition Department of Wuhan Union Medical College Hospital, pointed out that at a room temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, coconut is safer to drink within 4 hours after opening its mouth. However, during the process of food circulation, transportation, and sales, the surrounding environment temperature may change, and various people may come into contact. Merchants may also oversell even if they have not sold out, all of which pose food safety risks. If the immune system of the consumer decreases, adverse reactions may occur. At present, it is early summer, and the possibility of food spoilage is slightly lower. After entering the dog days, the temperature continues to be above 35 degrees Celsius, and the possibility of food being contaminated and spoiled will further increase. The Wuhan Consumer Association reminds consumers to try to purchase fully packaged coconut, ready to eat. When purchasing pre opened coconuts, it is advisable to choose legitimate channels, promptly check the listing date, packaging date, shelf life, and other precautions, and check whether the appearance of the coconut is intact. Generally, normal coconut water should be colorless and transparent, and can be poured out when drinking to distinguish whether it has deteriorated. (Outlook New Era Network)
