The Palace Museum of Culture in Hong Kong announced on the 22nd that a special exhibition titled "Gazing at Sanxingdui - New Archaeological Discoveries in Sichuan" will be launched in late September, showcasing 120 precious Sanxingdui cultural relics for approximately 4 months. On the same day, the Hong Kong Palace Museum signed an exhibition intention cooperation agreement with the Guanghan Sanxingdui Museum, Chengdu Jinsha Site Museum, Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, and Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, promoting cultural exchange between Sichuan and Hong Kong and promoting excellent traditional Chinese culture. It is reported that this exhibition will focus on new archaeological discoveries in the Sichuan region, represented by the Sanxingdui site. It will showcase 120 precious cultural relics such as bronze, jade, gold, and pottery dating from 2600 to 3300 years ago. Nearly half of them are the most important unearthed cultural relics from the Sanxingdui site from 2020 to 2022, and most of them are exhibited for the first time outside Sichuan province. Key exhibits include various bronze masks, bronze portraits, and gold masks unearthed from the Sanxingdui site. The Chengdu Jinsha Site Museum also provides several precious cultural relics that have never been exhibited outside, including jade axes dating back over 3000 years. Tang Fei, the director of the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, expressed the hope that through this exhibition, Hong Kong citizens can better understand the historical, artistic, and cultural values of the Bronze Age civilization, and tell the story of Chinese civilization. Wu Zhihua, curator of the Hong Kong Palace Museum of Culture, said that this special exhibition will be the highlight of the Hong Kong Palace Museum of Culture in 2023. It will enable Chinese and foreign audiences to understand the life and cultural exchanges between different regions and ethnic groups in ancient China, and nurture the splendid civilization of China for five thousand years, as well as the integrated and diversified development of China and the Chinese nation. The Hong Kong Palace Museum of Culture will also hold a series of academic seminars and public education activities with the theme of ancient Shu civilization during the special exhibition, deepening academic exchanges between Hong Kong and Sichuan in the field of ancient Shu archaeology and cultural research, and showcasing the country's century old archaeological achievements.
