The University of Chicago team led by Takashi Tanaka has developed a device that uses an electrode mesh worn on the back of the hand and fingers to simulate or enhance tactile sensation, allowing the palm and fingers to move unobstructed. Neural stimulation can make a single finger feel as if it is touching something, because the human palm has more touch receptors than the back of the hand to receive electrical signals sent by electrodes. The research team tested the device in several VR experiences, such as in virtual climbing, which allows people to more keenly feel the ropes in their palms while climbing in VR. The team believes that these gloves are also very useful in real-life learning tasks.
